The World System Concept
Tesla envisioned a global system using the Earth itself as a conductor. By resonating electromagnetic energy through the Earth's crust and the ionosphere simultaneously, he believed he could create standing waves of electrical energy accessible anywhere on the planet's surface with a simple receiving device. He called this the "World System."
Wardenclyffe Tower (1901–1917)
With financing from J.P. Morgan, Tesla began construction of Wardenclyffe Tower in Shoreham, Long Island. The 57-meter tower capped a copper hemisphere and sat above a shaft sunk 36 meters into the Earth. Tesla planned to use it for both wireless communication and power transmission. But Morgan withdrew funding in 1903 — possibly after realizing free wireless electricity would have no metered billing mechanism — and the project collapsed.
Was It Scientifically Possible?
Tesla's physics was partly correct and partly wrong. He correctly identified electromagnetic resonance phenomena, but his specific plans involved magnitudes of power and distances that would have required a practical understanding of the ionosphere that did not exist at the time. Modern wireless power transfer (inductive charging, WiTricity) operates on related but different principles — and works only at short range.
The Legacy
Wardenclyffe Tower was demolished in 1917. But Tesla's vision inspired a century of wireless power research. The Tesla Science Center has been working to restore the Wardenclyffe site as a museum since 2012. His World System concept remains an inspiring, if unrealized, dream of universal technological abundance.
