Ramanujan's Lost Notebook: The Mathematical Legacy That Stunned the World

In 1976, George Andrews of Pennsylvania State University was searching the archives of Trinity College, Cambridge. In a box of papers belonging to the late G.N. Watson, he found a sheaf of 138 loose, yellowing pages covered in mathematical formulas in an unfamiliar hand. It was Srinivasa Ramanujan's 'lost notebook' — written in the last year of his life (1919–1920) while dying of tuberculosis in Madras. It contained approximately 600 formulas, most unproven, many of extraordinary depth. Mathematicians are still verifying and extending them today.

What the Notebook Contains

The lost notebook is dominated by mock theta functions — mysterious objects Ramanujan invented in his final months. They resemble the theta functions of classical analysis but don't satisfy the same transformation properties. Ramanujan identified them in a letter to Hardy written weeks before his death. For 70 years, no one understood what they were. In 2002, Sander Zwegers showed they are components of 'harmonic Maass forms' — a deep structure connecting to modern number theory, string theory, and moonshine.

Partition Congruences

The notebook also contains results about partition congruences — patterns in the number of ways integers can be broken into sums. Ramanujan had noticed: the number of partitions of 5n+4 is always divisible by 5; of 7n+5 by 7; of 11n+6 by 11. He provided no proof. The proofs came decades later. The deeper explanation — Ramanujan's tau function and its connection to modular forms — took a century to fully understand.

How Did He Know?

The central puzzle of Ramanujan's work is how he derived results that required mathematical machinery not invented until decades after his death. Hardy believed Ramanujan had developed his own private theory of modular forms — not known to Western mathematicians at the time — through a combination of intuition, numerical experimentation, and mathematical instinct that bordered on the inexplicable.

What is Ramanujan's lost notebook?

Ramanujan's lost notebook is a collection of 138 pages of mathematical formulas written by Ramanujan in the last year of his life (1919-1920). Rediscovered in 1976, it contains ~600 results, mostly unproven, including mock theta functions, partition congruences, and continued fraction identities that mathematicians are still verifying.

What are mock theta functions?

Mock theta functions are mysterious functions Ramanujan invented in his final months, described in a letter to Hardy weeks before his death. For 70 years their nature was unclear. In 2002, Sander Zwegers showed they are components of harmonic Maass forms — objects with deep connections to number theory and modern physics.

Did Ramanujan prove his formulas?

Mostly no. Ramanujan stated results with confidence but provided proofs for only a fraction. He claimed his formulas came to him in dreams from the goddess Namagiri. Hardy estimated that of ~3,900 results in Ramanujan's notebooks, about two-thirds were already known or could be proved; the remaining third were entirely new and required new mathematics to verify.
