CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFIA

🇺🇸 Rosalie Elliot

What happened in round four

Elliot's word, in the fourth round, was avowal. Her spelling of one letter was indistinct - the kind of mumble a nervous child produces under lights - and the judges, unable to rule on what they had not heard clearly, put the question to her directly.

She could have repeated the letter they needed. Instead she told them she had said the wrong one. The Associated Press report the following day led on the response: the honesty of a young speller had brought her a standing ovation.

Why the story lasted

The anecdote has been retold for sixty years, most often in collections of inspirational writing, including a version published under the Chicken Soup for the Soul title. In those retellings the details drift - the round, the age, the size of the ovation - which is the usual fate of a story that passes through many hands.

The contemporary wire report is the anchor. It fixes the year, the word, the age and the ovation, and it is the version this page follows. Where the retellings add colour, this page leaves it out.

The choice she actually faced

A spelling bee is adjudicated on what the judges hear. When they cannot hear, the speller is in sole possession of the truth, and the rules cannot reach it. That is the situation Elliot was in for a few seconds in 1966.

She was eleven, in front of a national audience, with a place in the competition available for the price of saying nothing. The reason the moment is remembered is not that honesty is rare in children, but that the cost of it was so visible and so immediate.

The judges' position deserves noting too. A panel that cannot hear an answer has only two options, to guess or to ask, and asking puts the decision in the hands of the child being judged. In 1966 the panel asked. The reason the exchange became a story is that both sides of it behaved well, and only one of them paid for it.

The bee she was part of

Elliot came from Central, South Carolina, a small town in the state's north-western corner. The 1966 championship was won by Robert A. Wake, a 13-year-old from Houston, on the word ratoon.

Neither speller's file is thick. The national bee of that era was covered by the wires for a single news cycle, and most of what survives about any competitor is what the AP and UPI put on the wire on the day. In Elliot's case the story that survived is not about winning.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: her age of 11, her home town of Central, South Carolina, the word avowal, the fourth round, her admission to the judges and the standing ovation reported by the Associated Press.

Not documented in the sources used here: her school, her family, where she placed, how many times she competed, and anything about her life after 1966. The inspirational retellings that circulate add details this page does not, because they cite nothing.
