GCSE MATEMÁTICA

🇬🇧 Oscar Selby

What happened

The Surrey newspaper Get Surrey reported the result under the headline "Boy genius, seven, gets A* grade at maths GCSE", noting that he was believed to be the youngest person to secure the top grade in any GCSE examination. He was a pupil at Stamford Green Primary School in Epsom at the time.

The preparation was neither casual nor improvised. He was tutored by Dr Mike Ryde of Ryde Teaching Services for four hours every Saturday over nine months. That is roughly 150 hours of structured teaching, on top of primary school, for a subject with a syllabus written for pupils twice his age.

What his tutor said

Ryde's description of his pupil was measured rather than breathless. "He could probably apply himself to most things if he wanted," he said, adding: "He seems to be able to excel at whatever he sets his mind to."

He was equally careful about the effect of the attention. "He is still very grounded and down to earth about things," he told the paper. "He has got a healthy interest in sports and music, he's a very rounded young man." The article carries no quotations from Oscar or his parents, which is a common and sensible pattern in British coverage of very young children.

Child Genius, 2013

In 2013 the British Go Association noted that a nine-year-old Oscar Selby was appearing on Channel 4's Child Genius series. The programme sets British children against one another through rounds of memory, mathematics and general knowledge, and has been running in various forms since the 2000s.

That appearance is the reason his name still circulates: a newspaper story about an exam result reaches a county; a television series reaches the country.

How unusual the result was

Very young GCSE candidates are rare but not unique in Britain. The parenting site MadeForMums, cited in the research record, reported the case of a five-year-old girl passing GCSE maths, an indication that the record for youngest entrant and the record for youngest top grade are different things, and that the claim attached to Oscar was specifically about the A*.

The system permits it. GCSEs have no minimum age, so a private candidate of any age may be entered, usually with private tutoring of exactly the kind Oscar received. What is rare is not access to the exam but the grade: an A* requires accuracy under timed conditions on a paper written for teenagers.

Where Oscar Selby is now

No source gathered for this page documents his life after the 2013 television appearance: no later examinations, no university, no interview. His date of birth is not stated in any source read here, and the research record derives a birth year of about 2004 from the ages given in the reports.

That silence is the normal outcome for British children who make headlines for early examinations. The coverage arrives in a burst around one result, and unless the child chooses publicity later, the record simply stops. This page stops with it.
