🇺🇸 Nima Veiseh

What hyperthymesia is

Hyperthymesia, also called highly superior autobiographical memory, was first documented in 2006 by Elizabeth Parker, Larry Cahill and James McGaugh at the University of California, Irvine. Their subject was Jill Price, initially anonymised in the literature as AJ. As of April 2016, six cases had been confirmed in peer-reviewed articles.

The condition has two defining characteristics: spending an unusual amount of time contemplating one's own past, and an extraordinary ability to recall specific events from it in vivid detail. Those memories are autobiographical, involuntarily encoded and automatically retrieved, which distinguishes them entirely from the mnemonic techniques competitive memorisers train. Brain imaging of Price showed enlarged temporal lobes and caudate nuclei.

Veiseh's account

Veiseh's claim, as reported by BBC Future in January 2016, is that he remembers nearly every day since he was 15. He is described as a painter and polymath, and the encyclopedic record of the condition notes that he uses his memory of art history in making his paintings.

The date at which his recall begins is itself notable. Most documented cases describe an onset in childhood or early adolescence, and the memories accumulate from that point forward rather than reaching backwards into infancy. Fifteen is a specific starting line, and it is the figure BBC Future reported.

The 2022 challenge

One part of his story has been contested. A research paper published in 2022 found that having hyperthymesia does not increase creative thinking, a finding that contradicts the connection drawn between his memory and his painting.

This is worth stating plainly rather than leaving out. The claim that an unusual memory feeds artistic creativity is intuitive, widely repeated and, according to that paper, unsupported. Veiseh's own account of how he works is his to give; the general proposition it rests on has been tested and did not hold.

Blessing and curse

The BBC Future headline framed the condition as both a blessing and a curse, which matches what the literature describes. A person who cannot let go of a date cannot let go of what happened on it either, and the first documented case, Jill Price, described the constancy of recall as a burden as much as a gift.

That framing is also the reason coverage of hyperthymesia tends to be careful. These are not performers demonstrating a trick; they are a handful of confirmed individuals whose private lives are unusually available to them, and to anyone who asks.

What is documented and what is not

Documented: that BBC Future profiled him in January 2016, that he says he remembers nearly every day since 15, that he is a painter, that he has used his memory of art history in his work, that six cases of the condition had been confirmed in peer-reviewed articles by April 2016, and that a 2022 paper found hyperthymesia does not increase creative thinking.

Not documented in these sources: his age or date of birth, where he lives, where he studied, his exhibitions, and anything about his work since 2016. Whether his own case has been formally confirmed in the peer-reviewed literature, as opposed to reported in the press, is not established by the sources used here. No IQ figure appears in this file.
