The night the bee went prime time

On the evening of 1 June 2006, ABC carried the final of the Scripps National Spelling Bee from 8 p.m. until just after 10 p.m. Eastern time. It was the first prime-time broadcast in the competition's 79 years, and the reporting noted that the production borrowed the look of a sports telecast. The field had begun with 274 spellers in grades four to eight.

Finola Hackett was one of them, and one of the two still standing at the end. The Associated Press dispatch carried by NBC News described her as a confident speller through two days of competition - a judgement worth noting, because confidence is the quality the bee's format punishes hardest.

Weltschmerz

Hackett finished runner-up after failing on 'Weltschmerz'. The title went to Katharine Close, a 13-year-old eighth-grader from Spring Lake, New Jersey, who spelled 'Ursprache', a parent language, and became the first girl to win the bee since 1999. Close took home more than $42,000 in cash and prizes.

The champion's own reaction, to the AP, was two words long: 'I'm just in shock.' She said what she would remember most was hearing 'Ursprache'. The New York Times ran its account of the night the following morning under the observation that for a New Jersey eighth-grader, 'Ursprache' meant fame.

A Canadian at an American bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has never been an exclusively American event. Canadian regional winners have competed in Washington for decades, and Hackett's second place is among the strongest results any of them has recorded. The two reports used here identify her nationality but not her home province or school.

That is a real gap rather than an oversight on this page. Where a Canadian speller came from matters to the Canadian reader searching for her, and neither of the two cited dispatches supplies it. This page does not supply it either.

How hard second place is

Runner-up at the national bee is not a consolation. To reach the last two of 274 spellers a competitor must survive every round of a two-day written and oral competition in which a single letter ends the run. There is no aggregate score, no dropped worst round and no appeal on a genuine misspelling.

Hackett's exit word makes the point about the vocabulary involved. 'Weltschmerz' is not an English word in any ordinary sense: it is a German import whose spelling has to be reasoned out from the language of origin under television lights, in seconds, at fourteen.
