OLIMPÍADA DE MATEMÁTICA

🇷🇴 David-Andrei Anghel

What he did in Chiba

The olympiad sets three problems a day across two mornings, four and a half hours per paper, seven points per problem. Marking is done by coordinators who read the written argument and award partial credit, so a full seven means a complete proof with no unexamined case and no leap.

Anghel's line in the 2023 results is six sevens. He shares first place with the four other contestants who reached 42: Haojia Shi and Chunji Wang of China, Junhwi Bae of South Korea, and Derek Liu of the United States.

Romania and the olympiad

Romania founded the competition. The first International Mathematical Olympiad was held there in 1959, and the country has taken part in every edition since, with a national selection system and a training culture that long predates the competition's global expansion to more than a hundred countries.

A Romanian maximum in the modern era therefore carries a particular weight in the country's own coverage of the event. The field Anghel beat, 618 contestants, is roughly ten times the size of the first olympiad's entire entry.

Five out of 618

The proportion is the point. Five perfect papers from 618 contestants is fewer than one in a hundred, and the figure moves year to year with the difficulty of the problems: six in 2019, ten in 2022, five in 2023, one in 2024 and seven in 2026.

The medal structure, by contrast, is fixed by the olympiad's regulations. No more than half the field may receive a medal, and gold, silver and bronze are awarded in roughly a one to two to three ratio, which puts gold at about one contestant in twelve. Anghel's paper sits far above that threshold.

What the database records

This page rests on the competition's own results archive, which lists every contestant since 1959 with per-problem scores. It is a primary source, and for the facts it holds it is close to unimpeachable: the year, the host city, the country, the six scores, the total, the rank and the medal.

It holds nothing else. There is no age, no school, no city and no photograph in the entry for Anghel, and no press report about him was collected for this file. That is why this page gives no birth year and makes no claim about his life.

What happens after a perfect paper

The olympiad is limited to students in secondary education, so a contestant's career at it is short and ends abruptly. The database records no later appearance for Anghel after 2023.

Where he went next is not documented here. Perfect scorers are routinely recruited by strong mathematics departments, but that is a general pattern and not a statement about this contestant, and nothing in the sources used for this page follows him past the examination hall in Chiba.
