🇺🇸 Brandon Boynton

He reported his tormentors through a cardboard box in a school hallway, then rebuilt it as software.

The BullyBox reached about 100,000 students in 22 American states, plus New Zealand, Spain, France and the United Kingdom.

Brandon Boynton was bullied in middle school in Pendleton, Indiana, and reported it anonymously through his school's bully box. He later built the idea as software. The BullyBox, an anonymous reporting app sold to schools at $499 a year, reached about 100,000 students across 22 American states and four other countries. His company, MostBeastlyStudios, makes apps rather than games.

From a box in a hallway to an app

The original bully box is a piece of low-technology school administration: a container in which a pupil can leave an anonymous note about what is happening to them. Boynton used one, having been bullied in middle school, and the experience gave him the design brief.

The BullyBox does the same job with the constraints removed. A pupil can report at any hour, from anywhere, without being seen walking to a box in a corridor, and the report reaches staff immediately rather than whenever the box is emptied. Schools paid $499 a year for it.

The reach

Entrepreneur reported the app in use by approximately 100,000 students across 22 states of the United States, and in New Zealand, Spain, France and the United Kingdom.

That spread matters more than the raw number. Selling software into schools is famously slow: each district evaluates separately, budgets are annual, and a product that handles pupil safeguarding must satisfy administrators who carry legal responsibility for it. A teenager reaching four other countries with such a product had cleared that process repeatedly, and at a per-school price low enough for a single administrator to approve.

The economics are worth spelling out. At $499 a school, a product reaching roughly a hundred thousand pupils is not a lucrative business; it is a widely adopted one. The price was set low enough to be approved without a procurement process, which is how a single developer without a sales team put safeguarding software into hundreds of schools on four continents.

Apps, not games

Boynton's company, MostBeastlyStudios, was built on a stated refusal. He told Entrepreneur that he makes apps that make a difference rather than games, and that the point is software that improves lives.

That is an unusual commercial position for a teenage developer, because games are where the money and the audience are. The alternative he chose, institutional software sold to schools on annual contracts, is slower, duller and more durable, and it is the reason the product was still spreading years after it launched.

What it paid for

By August 2016, at 19, Boynton had a near-full scholarship to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, together with a four-year full-tuition Lilly Endowment scholarship.

Those awards are the practical outcome of the work. Building a piece of safeguarding software used across 22 states is the kind of record that scholarship committees can verify, and it converted a middle-school experience that he did not choose into a funded university education.

Where Brandon Boynton is now

The sources used here stop in August 2016, with the app in use internationally and the scholarships in hand. They do not record whether The BullyBox continued, what MostBeastlyStudios built afterwards, or what Boynton studied.

The problem he addressed has not gone away, and anonymous reporting has since become a standard feature of school safety systems in many countries. The specific claim this page makes is narrower and firmer: in 2016, a product built by a teenager who had been bullied was handling reports for roughly a hundred thousand pupils.
