SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Barrie Trinkle

The 1973 final

The Associated Press moved two versions of the 1973 story on 14 June. The Eugene Register-Guard ran it as "Texas girl wins prize for spelling"; the Milwaukee Journal headlined it "'Onomastics' Decides Spelling Bee". The record used here gives her winning word as vouchsafe.

The two accounts are reconcilable under the bee's endgame rule, in which a speller left alone after a rival's error must spell the missed word correctly and then one more to take the title. That would make onomastics the word that decided the outcome and vouchsafe the word that sealed it. No source used here states the sequence explicitly, and the discrepancy is noted rather than smoothed over.

Three years to the title

Her progression — 28th, fifth, first — is the classic shape of a bee career, and it is the strongest argument against the idea that champions are simply born with better memories. What changes between a 28th place and a title is not raw ability but method: which languages the speller studies, how the word lists are organised, and how the nerve holds at a microphone.

She was thirteen and from Fort Worth, Texas. The lucky blue jumper appears in the contemporaneous coverage, which is the sort of detail wire reporters of the era reached for when a child would not say anything quotable about her own preparation.

A life inside the competition

Most champions leave. Trinkle stayed. She became a word panelist for the bee — the people who select and vet the competition's word lists, a job that requires knowing exactly how hard a word is for a thirteen-year-old who has prepared properly. In 2006 she co-authored "How to Spell Like a Champ", which put the method into print for the first time in a serious way.

Scripps News reported on 28 May 2025 that dozens of past champions had gathered to mark the competition's hundredth year. Trinkle was there in her current role: a judge at the bee she won as a child.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1973 National Spelling Bee at thirteen, from Fort Worth, Texas, with vouchsafe recorded as the winning word and onomastics named in one headline as the decisive one; previous finishes of 28th in 1971 and fifth in 1972; the lucky blue jumper; later work as a bee word panelist; co-authorship of "How to Spell Like a Champ" in 2006; and a judging role at the bee as of 2025.

Not documented in the sources used here: her date of birth; her school; her education and other career; the runner-up in 1973; and the exact sequence of the final rounds that produced two different headline words.

A hundred years of the bee

The competition reached its hundredth year in 2025, and the gathering Scripps News covered is the clearest evidence of what it builds: an alumni body stretching back to the middle of the twentieth century, many of whom return as coaches, pronouncers, panelists and judges.

That continuity explains why the bee's word lists are so much harder than they were in 1973 without the competition becoming unwinnable. The people writing the lists are former competitors who know precisely where the difficulty sits, and they calibrate against a field that now arrives with years of structured preparation. Barrie Trinkle has been on both sides of that calibration — first as the child at the microphone, then as one of the adults deciding what she should have been asked.
