CONCURSO DE SOLETRAÇÃO

🇺🇸 Ashley White

Ecclesiastical

The National Spelling Bee is a brutal format for a child. There is no aggregate score and no second chance: one misheard consonant in one round and the bell ends the year. White drew ecclesiastical and went out on the first day of the 1999 competition, in the early rounds, long before the stage emptied to the finalists the cameras would follow.

That is the whole of her competitive record in the film, and it is why the more interesting question about her has never been the spelling. Spellbound was released in 2002, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary and took $5.7 million at the box office, which is to say that a national cinema audience watched a working-class girl from Washington lose in the third round.

The film's argument about class

Smithsonian's thirteen-years-later assessment framed Spellbound as a test of the American Dream, and White was one of the spellers on whom the test turned. The magazine describes her as working-class, African American, and raised by a single mother, against a field that included a Connecticut child whose family employed an au pair and a Californian from an upper-middle-class household.

The film's honesty about that gap is what has kept it in circulation. Nupur Lala, who won the 1999 bee on logorrhea, told Smithsonian that economic privilege, educational background and family dynamics played a big role in who did well. Preparation for a national bee is a purchased good as much as an earned one: word lists, coaching, an adult with free evenings to do the drilling.

Where Ashley is now

The follow-up is the answer to the film. By 2015, Smithsonian reported, White had earned a master's degree in social work from Howard University; she was working for the D.C. Department of Human Services, helping families achieve self-sufficiency; she was studying to qualify as a mental health clinician; and she was preparing to buy her first home.

Read against the round-three elimination, that record is the sharper achievement. The spelling bee measured one narrow thing on one morning. What White did afterwards, in the same city, was to make a career of the problem the film had used her to illustrate.

That is the 2015 position and no source consulted here goes past it.

The eight, thirteen years on

Smithsonian's conclusion about the group is flat and worth quoting for what it does not claim: all of the spellers featured in Spellbound went to college, and for the most part all have built satisfying careers. Nupur Lala was in medical school in Arkansas. Harry Altman had a mathematics PhD from Michigan. Angela Arenivar, the daughter of undocumented immigrants from Mexico, was teaching Spanish and beginning a doctorate. Emily Stagg was a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Neil Kadakia was a vice-president at a real-estate company.

One of the eight did not get a follow-up. Ted Brigham, from rural Missouri, died in 2007 while at medical school; the magazine gives no cause. A film about eight children is also, eventually, a record of what happened to eight adults.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: White is from Washington, D.C.; she was one of eight spellers followed in Spellbound; she was eliminated on ecclesiastical on the first day of the 1999 bee; Smithsonian describes her as working-class and African American and raised by a single mother; by 2015 she held a master's in social work from Howard University, worked for the D.C. Department of Human Services, was studying to become a mental health clinician and was preparing to buy her first home.

Not documented: her birth year and age, her school, her mother's name and occupation, and anything about her life after 2015. This page's research file records that viewers of the film helped support her college education; that detail does not appear in the Smithsonian article used here and has not been verified.
