A perfect score at Memoriad

Memoriad, described by World Mental Calculation as an international competition of memory and mental calculation, ran from 6 to 10 November 2024 in the United Arab Emirates and drew 121 competitors from 20 countries into its calculation events. Six disciplines were contested: additions of ten-digit numbers, multiplications of eight-digit numbers, square roots of six-digit numbers, division by five-digit numbers, calendar dates and a flash anzan marathon.

Rupela took third place in the square roots, timed at 239.55 seconds, and was one of only five competitors in the field with a perfect score. In an event where accuracy and speed are marked together, a clean sheet is the harder half of the result.

The World Cup in Paderborn

The Mental Calculation World Cup, organised by Ralf Laue, held its tenth edition on the weekend of 14 September 2024 at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn, Germany, with 35 calculators from 16 countries. Nine rounds were contested: calendar, addition, multiplication and square roots, plus five surprise tasks revealed during the competition.

Rupela finished third in the square roots with 27 correct answers for 26 points. The overall competition was won by Aaryan Shukla of India with 819.84 points, ahead of Kaloyan Geshev of Bulgaria and Hiko Chiba of Japan.

2022: winning a round nobody could prepare for

Two years earlier, at the ninth World Cup on 16 July 2022 at the same museum in Paderborn, Rupela won surprise round three outright, a task that required competitors to compare powers. Surprise rounds are announced only during the competition, so no rehearsed method exists for them.

The 2022 event was won by Aaryan Shukla with 604.33 points, recorded as 12 years old at the time, ahead of Ono Tetsuya of Japan and Mohammad El-Mir of Lebanon. The research record behind this page also places Rupela eighth overall in that edition.

Two flags, one competitor

Beyond arithmetic

The 2024 World Cup report adds one detail that no scoreboard would otherwise carry. During the event's public exhibition, Rupela demonstrated Rubik's cubes, including a solve with one hand, a solve while blindfolded and a four-by-four cube.

It is a small line in a results report, and it is the only glimpse the record offers of the competitor away from the answer sheet. No age, home city, school or occupation for him appears in the sources used here, and no Wikipedia article was found.
