The House of Wisdom
The Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) was established in Baghdad by Caliph Harun al-Rashid and expanded under al-Ma'mun (reigned 813–833 AD). It was a major research and translation institution — perhaps the world's first research university. Scholars translated Greek texts (Aristotle, Ptolemy, Euclid, Galen) into Arabic, then extended and transformed them. Al-Khwarizmi, al-Kindi, and Hunayn ibn Ishaq worked there.
Mathematics
Al-Khwarizmi's algebra (c. 820 AD) gave mathematics both a word ('algebra') and a systematic method. Omar Khayyam solved cubic equations geometrically. Al-Biruni calculated Earth's circumference more accurately than anyone before the modern era. Muhammad ibn Musa's colleagues translated and extended Euclid, Pythagoras, and Diophantus, making the mathematical heritage of Greece available to future generations.
Medicine
Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine synthesized Greek and Islamic medical knowledge into a five-volume encyclopedia that served as the standard European and Islamic medical textbook for 600 years. Al-Razi was the first to distinguish smallpox from measles, introduced clinical case studies, and challenged Galenic authority through observation. Al-Zahrawi (Abulcasis) wrote a 30-volume surgical encyclopedia that was the primary European surgery textbook for 500 years.
Optics and Physics
Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen, 965–1040 AD) wrote the Book of Optics — arguably the first work of modern experimental science. He disproved the ancient theory that the eye emits light, proved that vision results from light entering the eye, and developed the camera obscura principle. His experimental methodology was closer to modern scientific practice than anything in Greek philosophy.
The End of the Golden Age
The Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258 destroyed the House of Wisdom and killed an estimated 90,000–800,000 people. The canals that had irrigated Mesopotamia for millennia were destroyed. The Islamic world never fully recovered its intellectual pre-eminence. European scholars, meanwhile, had been absorbing translated Arabic texts since the 12th century — building on the Islamic Golden Age's achievements to produce the Scientific Revolution.
