Marie Curie's discovery of polonium and radium in 1898 represents one of the most extraordinary feats of scientific persistence in history. Working with her husband Pierre in a leaking shed at the École de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles in Paris, she processed tons of pitchblende — uranium ore — by hand to isolate tiny quantities of two new radioactive elements.

The starting point was a puzzle: Henri Becquerel had discovered in 1896 that uranium emitted radiation spontaneously, without any external energy source. Marie decided to investigate this systematically. Her key insight — and the central word of her 1898 thesis — was coining the term 'radioactivity' and establishing that it was an atomic property, not a chemical one.

Pitchblende emitted more radiation than its uranium content alone could explain. This suggested another radioactive element was presente. To isolate it, the Curies processed literally tons of pitchblende over four years, using industrial techniques Marie developed herself, to extract fractions of a gram of the new elements.

Polonium (named for Marie's homeland of Poland, then under Russian partition) was announced in July 1898. Radium, far more radioactive, was announced in December 1898. The Nobel Prize in Physics followed in 1903, shared with Pierre and Becquerel. After Pierre's death in 1906, Marie won a second Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911 for the isolation of pure radium metal.

The cost was immense. Working daily with radioactive materials without any protective equipment — the dangers were unknown at the time — Marie developed aplastic anaemia, almost certainly from radiation exposure. She died in 1934. Her laboratory notebooks remain too radioactive to handle safely and are stored in lead-lined boxes in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
