Medical school at 16
The route in mattered. Thompson, from South Carolina, took her bachelor's degree through Mary Baldwin's Program for the Exceptionally Gifted, an early-entrance college programme for girls that admits students well before the usual age, and went from there to Meharry Medical College in Nashville at 16.
American medical schools rarely admit anyone under twenty; the standard path requires a completed undergraduate degree, which typically means a candidate of 22 at the earliest. An admission at 16 means the undergraduate work was finished at an age when most pupils are in the eleventh grade.
The 2022 graduation
AfroTech reported on 24 May 2022 that Thompson was set to make history as the youngest Black woman to graduate from Meharry Medical College. NewsChannel 5 in Nashville covered the same story that month, introducing her as the 21-year-old on course to become the school's youngest Black female graduate.
Meharry is one of the historically Black medical schools in the United States and has trained Black physicians since the nineteenth century. A youngest-ever record at an institution of that age is a claim about a very long list of graduates.
A Meharry family
Thompson did not arrive at the school as an outsider. Around a dozen of her relatives are Meharry alumni, and her father, Samuel Thompson, is named in the coverage. The institution was, in the most literal sense, a family tradition she joined early rather than a door she had to find.
That context makes the achievement more legible, not less. The expectation was medicine; the variable was speed, and she compressed the timetable by about five years against the standard route.
Where Zindzi Thompson is now
After graduating she began a psychiatry residency at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, which is the last dated fact in these sources. A psychiatry residency in the United States typically runs four years, which would place its completion around 2026.
Whether she has finished it, and where she practises now, is not recorded in this file. Anyone citing her as the youngest doctor in America should also note that the documented claim is narrower and specific: youngest Black woman to graduate from Meharry.
