The part of the bee nobody sees

The Scripps bee is not only the oral rounds. Spellers sit a written test that combines spelling and vocabulary, and the scores decide who advances toward the finals. Padhy's 35 out of 36 tied for the highest in the field, which made her a favourite before a microphone was involved.

It is the least visible and most predictive part of the competition. A speller who scores at that level has demonstrated the breadth that the oral rounds only sample, and the finalists in 2019 were, almost without exception, the people who had done best on paper.

The test also does the competition's hardest administrative job. A field of hundreds cannot be reduced to a televised final by oral rounds alone in the time available, so the written paper carries the weight of the early cut, and its scores rarely surprise anyone who has seen them.

Aiguillette, and the eight champions

The final ran to 20 rounds across three days. Eight spellers remained, having beaten 557 competitors aged between seven and fifteen, and the officials could not eliminate any of them. Scripps declared all eight champions, each receiving 50,000 dollars and a Scripps Cup.

Padhy's word was aiguillette, a French term for an ornamental braided cord, the kind of borrowing that rewards a speller who can hear the language of origin before writing anything. The pronouncer Jacques Bailly described the group as "the most phenomenal assemblage of spellers in the history of this storied competition".

Asking the questions

Padhy became known during the competition for asking the pronouncer to repeat words, which is a technique rather than a nervous habit. Spellers are entitled to request repetitions, definitions, the language of origin, the part of speech and alternate pronunciations, and the strongest competitors use every one of those entitlements to narrow the possible spellings before committing.

It is why bee finals move slowly and why the television coverage, which compresses the questioning, makes the task look more like recall than it is. A word such as aiguillette is reconstructed, not remembered.

The etymology questions are the most valuable of them. French gives predictable endings, German gives compounds, Greek gives systematic roots across medicine and science, and a speller who has established the source language has usually eliminated most of the ways a word could be written.

That is the case for all eight of the 2019 champions. This page marks the gap rather than filling it, because the only honest answer to where a speller is now, in the absence of reporting, is that nobody has published it.

What broke the bee that year

The Associated Press called the competition too easy for its octet of champions; The Atlantic described eight middle schoolers toppling it. Both were describing the same failure, which was not a failure of the children.

The Washington Post's reporting pointed at an expanded field and the rise of private spelling coaches, an industry that prepares children with the intensity elite sport applies to junior athletes. A written-test score of 35 out of 36 is what that preparation looks like from the outside.
