The 2008 confirmation
USA Today published its report on 12 May 2008 under a headline that captures how new the phenomenon still was: another person with super-memory skills comes forward. At that point the condition had only recently been described in the research literature, and Baron's confirmation made him the third documented case.
Third of three is the number that matters. Being confirmed as a case is not a matter of self-report: it requires a researcher to test recall against verifiable records, repeatedly, across decades of a subject's life. The research record behind this page notes that Baron says he began categorising events at the age of six.
Every movie he has seen
The detail that attached itself to his name is cinematic recall: he can account for every film he has watched. It is a useful illustration of what the condition is, because it is checkable. A claim about a private childhood afternoon cannot be verified; a claim about which films a man saw, and when, can be.
That checkability is what separates documented superior autobiographical memory from the far larger population of people who believe they have unusually good memories. The cases that reach the literature are the ones that survive testing.
60 Minutes, 2010
On 19 December 2010, CBS broadcast a 60 Minutes segment on the subject titled Understanding the gift of endless memory, reported by Lesley Stahl. The research record for this page places Baron in that segment.
The broadcast is the reason the phenomenon is known outside psychology departments at all. A network news magazine putting several confirmed cases on camera in the same hour turned a small research literature into public knowledge, and it is the source most people who search for Baron's name are actually remembering.
What the condition is, and is not
Highly superior autobiographical memory is not a trained skill. It is distinct from the mnemonic systems used by memory-sport competitors, who deliberately encode information into images and routes and can teach the method to anyone. The autobiographical kind arrives unbidden and is retrieved automatically.
It is also not a general improvement in memory. The documented cases recall the events of their own lives with unusual precision; nothing in the coverage used here claims that they learn faster, score higher on tests or remember material they were not present for. Describing the condition as a superpower, as headlines tend to, overstates what the research supports.
What is documented and what is not
Documented: that Rick Baron of Cleveland was confirmed in 2008 as the third known case of highly superior autobiographical memory, that he can recall every film he has seen, and that the phenomenon was the subject of a 60 Minutes segment reported by Lesley Stahl in December 2010.
Not documented in these sources: his age or date of birth, his occupation, his family, the identity of the researchers who confirmed him, the tests they used, and anything about his life since 2010. His statement that he began categorising events at six comes from the research record. No IQ figure appears anywhere in this file, and the condition is not a measure of intelligence.
