The quarter-final and the semi-final
Season eleven premiered on 31 May 2016 and ran its quarter-finals from 26 July to 24 August. Rockett performed in the third of those weeks, listed in the season's records as a ten-year-old magician from Los Angeles, and advanced.
The semi-finals followed between 30 August and 7 September. He appeared in the second of them and went out there. The records keep the round, the age, the city and the result; they do not keep the trick. No source gathered here describes what he actually performed on either night.
A strong year for magic
Magic did well in season eleven. Jon Dorenbos, a magician who had received a golden buzzer from a guest judge, finished third overall. The mime act Tape Face, another performer built on physical misdirection rather than song, reached the final ten. The winner, Grace VanderWaal, was a 12-year-old singer with a ukulele; the mentalist duo The Clairvoyants came second.
That is the company a ten-year-old was keeping. The judging panel was Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell, with Nick Cannon hosting. Golden buzzers that season went to Laura Bretan, Grace VanderWaal, Sal Valentinetti, Calysta Bevier and Dorothy Williams, and, from guest judges, to Jon Dorenbos, Sofie Dossi, Malevo and Jayna Brown. Rockett received none of them; he advanced on results.
The scale of the show
The season eleven finale was broadcast on 14 September 2016 and drew 14.41 million viewers, with a 2.8 rating among adults aged 18 to 49. The semi-finals that Rockett reached were live network television one step below that.
For a child performer, the arithmetic of the show is unforgiving in a specific way: the audition rounds are edited, and the live rounds are not. A magic act that survives into the semi-finals has to work at full speed, once, in front of a studio audience, four judges and a national broadcast, with no possibility of a second take. He did that twice.
What is documented — and what is not
Firm: his age of ten, his act, his home city of Los Angeles, his advance from quarter-final week three, and his elimination in the second week of the semi-finals of 2016.
Not documented in the sources gathered here: his family, who taught him magic, when he started, whether he performed with anyone else on the show, what the routines contained, and what he has done since September 2016. There is no Wikipedia article in his own name — he appears inside the season eleven results tables.
Why the record thins out
A talent show produces a very particular kind of fame: total for a few weeks, then nothing. Acts that reach a final are documented in percentages and viewing figures for years afterwards. Acts eliminated a round or two earlier leave a line in a table and little else, even when they were among the last twenty of thousands.
That is the shape of this record. The season's ten finalists are listed by name, act and age; the semi-finalists are listed by week and result. Rockett belongs to the second group, which is why a page about him can state precisely where he stood in September 2016 and nothing at all about where he stands now. Filling that gap would require reporting that none of the sources gathered here contains.
