A solo dancer in a variety show
Britain's Got Talent has never been a dance competition. The fifth series, broadcast on ITV between 16 April and 4 June 2011, put singers, comedians, groups and novelty acts on the same stage and asked the public to choose between them. Hobley entered it as a contemporary dancer, working alone, at the age of 11.
The show's results record for that series lists him in the third semi-final. He finished second there in the public vote, which under the format used that year did not carry an act through automatically. The judges then chose him, and he became one of ten acts in the final.
The final, and where he placed
The 2011 final was won by Jai McDowall, a singer, with the singer Ronan Parke second and the boy band New Bounce third. Hobley finished eighth, with 3.5 per cent of the votes cast.
Eighth of ten sounds modest until the funnel behind it is counted. Every finalist had come through open auditions, a televised audition round and a live semi-final broadcast to a national audience. The results programme that closed the series drew 12.95 million viewers, a figure most British television cannot approach in any decade, let alone this one.
The panel he performed for
The judging line-up that year was unusual. Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden sat on the panel as they had before, joined for the live shows by the American actor David Hasselhoff and the comedian Michael McIntyre; Louis Walsh sat in at the London auditions. Ant and Dec presented on ITV, with Stephen Mulhern handling the companion programme on ITV2.
That is the room an 11-year-old dancer walked into: four judges, two presenters, a live broadcast and an audience larger than the population of Greece. The record of what he danced, and to what music, is not part of the series results table used here.
What is documented — and what is not
The firm facts are the competition ones: the year, the age, the discipline, the semi-final route, the final placing and the percentage. They come from the series record itself, which is the strongest kind of source for a competition result.
Everything else is missing from the sources gathered for this page. There is no home town, no school, no family detail, no interview and no account of what he did after June 2011. His nationality is taken from the show he competed on rather than from a document that states it. Where a page of this kind would normally carry a “where is he now” paragraph, this one carries a gap, and the gap is left visible rather than filled.
Why child finalists disappear from the record
The pattern repeats across every series of the format. A child performs once or twice on live television, is watched by millions, loses to an adult act, and returns to school. Tabloid interest lasts days. Unless the performer signs a record deal or joins a touring company, no institution keeps updating the file.
What survives is the scoreboard: a results table listing an act, an age, a semi-final and a percentage. For most of the children who have passed through these shows, that table is the entire permanent record, and it is the only thing this page is willing to state as fact.
