Delaware State University announced it on 20 December 2015: the institution had conferred a PhD on its youngest ever doctoral candidate. The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education followed in January 2016, and Good Black News covered the milestone the same month.

The field was applied chemistry, and the research concerned hydrogen storage, one of the central unsolved problems in clean energy. Hydrogen is easy to make and difficult to keep, and a dissertation in that area sits at the point where chemistry meets engineering economics.

A compressed education

The doctorate was the end of a long compression. He entered college at 15 and completed his studies at Lincoln University, the historically Black institution in Pennsylvania, at 18. Four years later he had a PhD.

Elyte Energy

He founded Elyte Energy, a battery technology venture based in Delaware. The state's economic development body, Delaware Prosperity Partnership, carries his profile among its success stories, which is the clearest documentation that the company is a real operating concern rather than a plan.

The move from hydrogen storage research to battery technology is a short one. Both are energy storage problems; the difference is chemistry and market. A researcher who has worked on how to hold energy in one medium is well placed to work on another.

What 'youngest PhD' does and does not mean

Institutional records of this kind are precise and limited. Delaware State's claim is about Delaware State: the youngest person to whom it has awarded a doctorate. It is not a national or global record, and the university did not present it as one. Doctorates have been awarded younger elsewhere, and any page claiming otherwise is overreaching.

What the record does support is more interesting than a superlative. A doctorate requires original research that a committee of specialists accepts as a contribution to the field. It cannot be accelerated by examination technique, and it cannot be completed by a student who is merely quick. Hayes was 22, with a dissertation on hydrogen storage and, afterwards, a company built on the same science.
