MATHS OLYMPIAD

🇻🇳 Hoang Huu Quoc Huy

He topped the world rankings in Rio and led a Vietnamese team that took four golds.

Joint first at the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad, in a year when nobody produced a perfect paper.

Vietnam's strongest showing in recent olympiad history came in Rio de Janeiro in 2017, and Hoang Huu Quoc Huy was at the head of it. He scored 35 out of 42, shared first place in the world with contestants from Iran and Japan, and led a Vietnamese team that returned with four gold medals from a field of 615.

Three contestants, one score sheet

The official row lists him as Hữu Quốc Huy Hoàng, with scores of 7, 7, 0, 7, 7, 7. Complete solutions to five problems and nothing on the third. Amirmojtaba Sabour of Iran and Yuta Takaya of Japan produced exactly the same six numbers, and the three of them finished the 58th olympiad tied at the top of the world.

No contestant in 2017 scored a perfect 42. Problem three, set in the hardest position on the first paper, returned nothing for a very large part of the field, and first place went to the small group that had dropped no marks anywhere else. It is a ranking produced by consistency under a ceiling rather than by a breakthrough above it.

The Vietnamese team in Rio

Behind Quoc Huy, the rest of the team delivered one of Vietnam's best collective results. Quang Dũng Lê and Cảnh Hoàng Nguyễn both scored 28 for gold at joint fourteenth, Nhật Duy Phan took 25 for gold at rank thirty-six, and Nam Khánh Phạm scored 21 for silver.

Four golds out of five listed contestants, in a year when the gold cut-off stood at 25 points, is a result that few countries manage. Vietnam placed three contestants inside the top forty of the world rankings, and its leading contestant at the very summit of them.

A name written two ways

Vietnamese naming order places the family name first, so the contestant known at home as Hoàng Hữu Quốc Huy appears in Western-ordered listings as Hữu Quốc Huy Hoàng or Hoang Huu Quoc Huy. All three refer to the same person and the same row in the 2017 table.

This is worth stating because the variants make the record harder to trace than it should be. A reader searching one spelling will not necessarily find the other, and the official results page itself uses the reordered form. The page here uses the Vietnamese-order spelling in the headline and records the official form alongside it.

What the table records — and what it does not

The firm facts are the organisers' own: the country, the per-problem scores, the total of 35, the shared first place, the gold medal, the year and the host city of Rio de Janeiro. Nothing on this page depends on a secondary account of the competition.

The table publishes nothing else. There is no age, no date of birth, no school, no city and no photograph, and no source gathered here describes how Quoc Huy qualified, what he studied afterwards or whether he competed again. Those gaps are listed rather than filled with assumptions.

Vietnam's long run at the top

The official results make Vietnam's persistence visible across nearly a decade. Quoc Huy shared first in the world in 2017. In 2025 Trong Khai Vo finished eighth with 38 points. In 2026 Dinh Tung Nguyen took gold at joint fourteenth with 36, having finished ninety-first with a silver the year before.

The pattern is national rather than personal. Different cohorts, different problem sets, and a country that keeps returning contestants to the same part of the table. That is the kind of result which points at a selection and training system, and it is the context in which a single joint first place is best understood.
