The youngest graduate at LACC
Los Angeles City College, founded in the 1920s and one of California's oldest two-year public colleges, had never graduated anyone as young. In June 2023 Currie collected an associate degree in studio arts with a perfect grade point average. ABC7 Los Angeles, NBC Los Angeles and KTLA all covered the ceremony; the Antelope Valley Press, her local paper, ran it as a Palmdale story.
Studio arts is a detail worth holding onto. The acceleration narrative usually arrives attached to mathematics or computer science. Currie's degree was in making things, and her coursework had the studio hours to match.
The decision that made the story unusual
CNBC, which interviewed the family in June 2023, led on the part everyone else had treated as an aside: her parents were sending her to high school. Roderick and Blanca Currie's reasoning was not that the college work had been too hard but that the years it had skipped past were worth having. Their daughter would continue taking college courses, and she would also do the four ordinary years of an American adolescence.
The interview turned into a piece of parenting journalism rather than a prodigy item, which is why it travelled furthest of all the coverage. It offered the one thing most early-college stories cannot: a family talking about the costs of speed.
What the coverage agreed on
Across five outlets the core facts did not move. Age 12; associate degree; 4.0 grade point average; youngest in the college's history; Palmdale, in the high desert north of Los Angeles; and a plan to attend high school next.
That consistency matters in a genre where numbers routinely drift between retellings. Here the local paper, three Los Angeles broadcasters and a national business network all published the same figures within days of each other.
Where Fiona Currie is now
As of the 2023 reporting she was attending high school at a normal pace while continuing to take college courses. No source used here documents anything after that: no named high school, no university destination, no later interview.
For a child who was 12 in 2023, that silence is appropriate rather than a gap to be filled. What can be said is what was published at the time, and this page does not go beyond it.
Why the choice was the interesting part
Early college in the United States runs on dual enrolment, which lets school-age students take credit courses at community colleges. Thousands of teenagers use it each year, and a determined student who starts at nine or ten can finish an associate degree before turning 13. The mechanism is well established; the headlines it produces arrive every graduation season.
What almost never follows is a deliberate step back. The logic of acceleration pushes forward, toward the next degree and the youngest-ever record at the next institution. The Currie family's decision to bank the degree and then let their daughter be fourteen among fourteen-year-olds cuts against that logic, and it is the reason her story has outlasted the news cycle that produced it. A record was set in Los Angeles that June. The more durable thing was a family saying out loud that a childhood is not a bottleneck to be optimised.
