🇺🇸 Braeden Benedict

The competition

The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge selects a small group of middle-school finalists each year and pairs each of them with a 3M scientist for a summer of work. Over roughly three months, the finalists turn an idea into a working prototype under that mentorship.

The 2011 final was held on 4 October at the 3M Innovation Center in St Paul, Minnesota. Ten finalists presented their prototypes, combined 3M technologies into new solutions, and worked through a tornado-prediction scenario in front of a judging panel that included Reed Timmer of the Discovery Channel series Storm Chasers. Benedict, then a student at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, won.

The device

His project was a low-cost impact detection device intended to make harmful concussions easier to identify in athletes. In 2011 that was a live argument rather than a settled one: concussion protocols in youth and school sport were being rewritten, and the practical obstacle was that the hits that matter cannot reliably be judged from the sideline.

A cheap sensor changes the economics of that problem. Instrumented helmets existed, but at prices that suited professional and college programmes rather than school teams. The announcement describes the device's purpose and its low cost; it does not publish the sensor type, the threshold used or any validation data, so the engineering detail is not on the public record here.

The prize — and the runner-up who became famous

Benedict received the title of America's Top Young Scientist, $25,000 and a trip from Discovery Student Adventures. Every finalist was given a 3M camcorder projector to document the summer.

The rest of the leaderboard is worth reading. Second place went to Cheyenne Hua of Hunter College High School in New York for a flood-prevention innovation, third to Nolan Leonard of Mobile, Alabama, for a pedestrian safety alert system, and fourth to Caroline Boschetto of Holland, Pennsylvania, for a renewable energy capture device. Jack Andraka, of North County High School in Glen Burnie, Maryland, finished in the fifth-to-tenth group.

Why the 2011 result is still cited

The Young Scientist Challenge is aimed at middle-school students, which makes it one of the earliest points at which a national title can be won in American science. Winners are 13 or 14, working with professional mentors, and presenting prototypes rather than posters.

The format explains why the projects tend to be practical. A summer with a 3M scientist pushes an idea towards something that can be held up and demonstrated, and the judging rewards that. Benedict's sensor fitted the pattern exactly: a real problem in school sport, addressed with hardware cheap enough for a school to buy.

Firm: the title, the date, the $25,000 prize, his age, his school and town, and the nature of the device, all from the announcement issued by Discovery Education and 3M.

Open: everything afterwards. No university, patent, company or later interview appears in the sources gathered for this page, and no claim about his present work is made here. The record documents a 14-year-old's win in 2011 and stops there.
