The drawing was not the product of months of preparation. “I came up with the idea at the last minute, actually the day of the deadline,” she told Fortune. She had been looking at the real photograph that inspired the drawing, she said, and thought: why not reverse it.
That account is worth holding against the finished image, which reads as composed rather than hurried. What it suggests is that the idea, not the execution, was the scarce thing, and that she already had the photograph in her head long before she had the contest in mind.

Peña Popo was the valedictorian of Arabia Mountain High School in DeKalb County, Georgia, and was bound for the University of Southern California. The win brought her a $30,000 scholarship. It brought her school a $50,000 technology grant.
The announcement was not made quietly. Fortune reported that she was told she had won on Jimmy Fallon's programme, which put a high-school student's drawing of her mother in front of a national late-night audience before it ever reached the homepage.
