Why Unification Is Needed
Physics has two foundational frameworks: general relativity (gravity, spacetime curvature, large scales) and quantum mechanics (electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces, small scales). They are mathematically incompatible at the Planck scale (10⁻³⁵ m, 10¹⁹ GeV). Combining them produces infinities that cannot be removed. A theory of quantum gravity is needed. String theory claims to provide one.
What Strings Are
In string theory, point particles are replaced by tiny one-dimensional objects (strings) roughly 10⁻³⁵ m long — the Planck length. Open strings have free endpoints; closed strings are loops. A string's vibrational mode determines which particle it appears to be: one mode is a photon, another is an electron, another is the graviton (hypothetical carrier of gravity). The spectrum automatically includes a spin-2 particle that behaves like a graviton — a fact that excited physicists enormously in the 1970s.
Extra Dimensions
String theory only works mathematically in 10 dimensions (or 11, in M-theory). The extra 6 (or 7) spatial dimensions are 'compactified' — curled up so small they cannot be detected at accessible energies. The shape of the extra dimensions determines the physics — which particles exist, what their masses are, what forces act. There are roughly 10⁵⁰⁰ possible compactifications (the 'landscape') — essentially any physics is achievable.
The Problem
String theory's landscape implies it predicts nothing specific: for any observation, some compactification exists that produces it. Critics (Lee Smolin, Peter Woit) argue this makes it unfalsifiable and therefore not science. Defenders argue the landscape is an anthropic selection — we observe physics compatible with life. After 50 years, no unique string theory prediction has been experimentally confirmed.
