🇫🇷 Zackaria Dia

Second on the world under-20 all-time list — behind only Mondo Duplantis

2026 World Athletics U20 pole vault champion • French U20 record 5.82m • European U20 silver at 17, as the youngest in the final

There is one name ahead of Zackaria Dia on the world under-20 all-time pole vault list, and it is Armand Duplantis. On 13 June 2026, at the Envol Trophée, the eighteen-year-old from Pont-Audemer in Normandy cleared 5.82 metres, setting a French U20 record and taking it from Anthony Ammirati. Eight weeks later, on 9 August at Hayward Field in Eugene, he won the world U20 title with 5.80 — clearing 5.65, 5.70, 5.75 and 5.80 all on first attempts before three failures at 5.85.

The bar-by-bar record of the final, published by the French federation, is the clearest description of how he won it. He entered the competition at 5.35 metres and cleared it first time. He missed once at 5.60 and then passed, moving straight to 5.65 — a decision that costs a vaulter the safety of an extra attempt but preserves energy for the heights that matter. From there he cleared four consecutive bars without a single failure. Estonia's Henri Apri took silver with 5.75, a national U20 record.

The bronze medal in that competition changed hands after the event. Jaxon Jerabek of the United States initially finished third with a personal best of 5.60 but was subsequently disqualified, and the medal passed to his teammate Isaiah Whitaker on 5.45 on countback. Several results round-ups still print the original podium; the corrected one is the record.

Dia's route through the age groups has been steep and continuous. In 2025 he won gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Skopje with 5.20, then took silver at the European U20 Championships in Tampere with 5.40 as the youngest athlete in the final at seventeen. The 2026 indoor season produced 5.62 in Caen in January and 5.70 in Rouen in March, along with a fifth place at the senior French Indoor Championships — a meeting in which he was competing against full internationals rather than juniors.

French pole vaulting is the deepest national programme in the event outside the United States, with a lineage running through Jean Galfione, Renaud Lavillenie and Ammirati, and the domestic standard at U20 level is correspondingly brutal. Taking the national U20 record inside that system, rather than in a country with a thin field, is the part of Dia's record that carries most information about where he sits internationally.

The honest framing of Eugene is that he was the overwhelming favourite and delivered. He arrived as the world U20 leader, and 5.80 was two centimetres below the height he had already cleared in June, so nothing was set there. What was proved is consistency under championship conditions — four first-time clearances in a row, on a day when the athlete expected to win is the one most exposed.

All-time lists are the least sentimental measure in athletics, and Dia's position on this one is the fact that matters: second among every under-20 vaulter ever recorded, behind the man who has since rewritten the senior world record. He reached it inside the deepest pole vault programme in Europe, by taking the French U20 record off an athlete who had held it as a world-class junior himself, and he backed it up eight weeks later with a championship win built on four consecutive first-time clearances.

Two caveats keep it in proportion. He did not set a record in Eugene — 5.80 was below his own 5.82 — and he entered that final as the clear favourite, so it was a confirmation rather than a breakthrough. And second on an all-time U20 list is a position many vaulters have occupied without ever clearing six metres as seniors. The next two seasons, not the medal, will settle it.
