Sycophant

The Chicago Tribune's report of 5 June 1964 was headed simply "Ohio Boy Wins Spelling Bee". Half a century later the Akron Beacon Journal reprinted its own front page from the day after the win, under the line "June 4, 1964: Our Billy is champion speller in nation!".

Sycophant is Greek by way of Latin, and the y in the first syllable is the trap: a speller working from sound alone will reach for an i. Working from the language of origin instead — which is the whole discipline — makes it straightforward.

A newspaper's fifth champion

The Akron Beacon Journal had by then sent five national champions to Washington, which is a remarkable record for a single regional sponsor. It reflects a newspaper that took its bee seriously over decades: promoting it in print, running a competitive regional field, and treating the winner as local news for the whole summer.

Cleveland Magazine returned to the subject in August 2012, in a piece titled "Bee Prepared" — the kind of retrospective that keeps a regional bee's history in circulation long after the participants have grown up.

Medicine, and Ohio

The record used here has him educated at the College of Wooster and Ohio State, and practising afterwards as a physician in the Akron area. It is the most common destination in this whole collection: of the champions whose adult careers are documented, a striking share went into medicine.

Staying in the region is less common. Most champions who go on to professional careers leave for the cities where those careers are concentrated. A national title in 1964 and a medical practice a few miles from the town that produced him is a quieter kind of biography, and a harder one to follow through the archive.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1964 National Spelling Bee on sycophant, aged twelve, from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; sponsorship by the Akron Beacon Journal, its fifth national champion; the paper's front page of 5 June 1964; a 2012 Cleveland Magazine retrospective on the regional bee; and later practice as a physician in the Akron area.

Not documented in the sources used here: his date of birth; his school and grade; the runner-up; his medical specialty and where he practised; and anything about him in recent decades. The College of Wooster and Ohio State detail is carried from the research record rather than from a source read for this page.

What the sponsors built

For most of the twentieth century the bee was a newspaper enterprise from top to bottom. A paper paid for the regional competition, printed the word lists, covered the local rounds, and sent its winner to the national finals with a reporter in tow. The Beacon Journal's five champions are the visible result of doing that consistently for decades.

The system's decline explains why later champions are harder to trace. As regional papers cut back, the sponsorship network thinned and the local coverage that followed a champion home thinned with it. The 1964 archive contains a national wire story, a proud front page and a magazine retrospective — which, for a twelve-year-old from Cuyahoga Falls, is more than most people's childhoods leave behind.
