SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Samir Patel

He tied for third in the national spelling bee at nine, and for second at eleven

The Colleyville, Texas, speller went out on boudin in 2003 and on Roscian in 2005 — both times to older champions.

Samir Patel was nine years old when he tied for third at the 2003 National Spelling Bee, an age at which most competitors have not yet qualified. Two years later, at eleven, he tied for second. The Texas speller was beaten in 2005 by a 13-year-old Californian who won on appoggiatura. What the record shows is a child competing several years above his bracket, repeatedly.

Third place at nine

In 2003 Patel, of Colleyville, Texas, finished in a tie for third at the National Spelling Bee. He was nine. The word that ended his run was boudin, a French-derived term for a sausage, and the kind of loanword the bee uses late in a final precisely because English spelling gives no reliable guide to it.

The scale of that result is easy to miss. National finalists are typically thirteen or fourteen; the field is drawn from school and regional bees that most nine-year-olds never survive. Patel was placing in the top three against opponents with four or five more years of reading behind them.

Second place at eleven

He came back. In 2005, at eleven, Patel tied for second. The Associated Press account carried by USA Today on 3 June recorded the champion as a Californian who won on appoggiatura — a musical ornament, from the Italian — and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel headlined the result 13-year old from California is new king bee.

The word that eliminated Patel that year was Roscian, meaning of or relating to acting, after the Roman actor Roscius. Twice, then, he was removed by a proper-noun derivative rather than by anything a child could reason out from first principles.

The boy who asked questions

NBC News, covering the 2004 bee won by an Indiana boy, noted Patel's habit at the microphone: he worked the judges for clues, asking for language of origin, alternate pronunciations and definitions before committing a letter. That is the core technique of elite spelling, and it is unusual to see it deployed by a competitor of his age.

A speller who knows the roots can reconstruct a word he has never seen. The questions are not stalling. They are the search: a Latin origin implies one pattern, a German origin another, and the difference decides the spelling before the first letter is said aloud.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented here: the 2003 third-place tie at nine, the 2005 second-place tie at eleven, the two words that ended those runs, his home town of Colleyville, and the questioning technique noted by NBC in 2004. The research record gives his birth year as 1994.

Not documented in these sources: how he placed in 2004, whether he returned in later years, and anything about his adult life. Patel is frequently discussed online as one of the bee's most persistent competitors; that broader story is not established by the reports used on this page.

Why placing young is the hard part

The national bee is not a test of intelligence so much as of accumulated vocabulary, etymological pattern recognition and nerve under lights. All three improve with age, which is why the champions cluster in the last year of eligibility and why the youngest strong finishers are the ones specialists notice.

Patel's two results sit exactly there. A tie for third at nine and a tie for second at eleven are not near-misses in a children's contest; they are two of the best finishes anyone that young has produced in a competition designed for teenagers.
