Thirteen to nineteen, in six years

The sequence is documented across the local and national coverage of her graduation. Community college at thirteen, Texas A&M at fourteen, a bachelor's degree at sixteen, and a doctorate conferred in December 2018 at nineteen. She had been homeschooled by her mother, Nancy Shastid, before the college years began.

KERA News in Dallas reported the graduation on 14 December 2018, ABC13 in Houston and the Denton Record-Chronicle covered it the same month, and Texas A&M noted on 13 December that a former student of its own had become the youngest doctoral graduate at the University of North Texas.

What her doctorate was about

The field was educational psychology, and the subject matter was the education of gifted children: the group to which every institution she had passed through had assigned her.

That is an unusual position for a researcher. Most academics studying acceleration have watched it from outside; Jett had been accelerated through six years of education before she was twenty, which gives her access to the experience and, at the same time, a stake in what the research concludes.

The vocabulary problem

Coverage of her graduation recorded a sharp objection to the language used about people like her. Of all the labels applied to her, she said, former child prodigy was the most offensive.

The complaint is precise rather than decorative. Prodigy frames a person as a spectacle, and former turns the achievement into something that has expired; both suggest that the interesting part of the life is over by twenty. For a researcher beginning a career in educational psychology, that framing is an occupational hazard as much as a personal irritation.

The objection has a practical edge for someone entering the field. Research on gifted children has to describe its subjects somehow, and the words available in ordinary journalism, prodigy, genius, whiz kid, carry a spectacle that the academic vocabulary of giftedness and acceleration was built to avoid.

Those gaps are listed rather than filled. What the record does establish is a completed doctorate in a rigorous field at an age when most students are in their second undergraduate year, achieved through a sequence of institutions that each had to agree to take her early.

Why records like this are rare in doctorates

Acceleration through school is relatively common in the gifted-education literature; acceleration through a doctorate is not. A PhD is limited by process rather than by ability: supervisors, committee schedules, data collection, ethics approvals and a defence that cannot be sat early.

That is why a doctorate at nineteen is a different order of achievement from an early bachelor's degree. It requires an institution to move at the student's pace across several years, and it requires the student to produce original research that a committee of adults is prepared to sign off. The University of North Texas had never conferred one on someone younger.
