Hydrophyte

A hydrophyte is a plant that grows in water. The word is Greek throughout — hydor, water; phyton, plant — and it is a textbook case of why root-language study beats memorisation: a speller who has never met the word can still build it, provided the pronouncer supplies the language of origin.

That is precisely what the UPI headline of 1974 recorded, in the Lodi News-Sentinel and elsewhere: the spelling bee winner had never heard the word. The Tuscaloosa News led its 6 June edition with the local angle, reporting that a Gordo girl had won the national spelling crown.

A sixth-grader, and a first for Alabama

She was twelve and in the sixth grade. That is young for a champion: the field is dominated by seventh- and eighth-graders on their second or third national appearance, and the record notes she was the first sixth-grader to win since 1961.

She was also Alabama's first national champion. State firsts are a recurring feature of the bee's history and they matter locally for decades — the Tuscaloosa News was still invoking her in 2001, when another Alabamian reached the finals, under a headline asking whether the state might produce a champion twice.

Television, and Jean Shepherd

The 1974 finals were televised on PBS, hosted by Jean Shepherd — the humorist and radio monologuist best known now for the film A Christmas Story. It is an odd pairing on paper and a shrewd one in practice: a competition of silences and single words needs a presenter who can fill the gaps without trampling them.

The runner-up was Gail Meier. Televising the bee, decades before it became a cable fixture, is the detail that dates the 1974 event most precisely: public broadcasting had decided that children spelling was worth an afternoon of national airtime.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1974 National Spelling Bee on hydrophyte, aged twelve, as a sixth-grader from Gordo, Alabama; her standing as the state's first champion and the first sixth-grader to win since 1961; a PBS broadcast hosted by Jean Shepherd; Gail Meier as runner-up; and a 2001 Tuscaloosa News retrospective invoking her win.

Not documented in the sources used here: her date of birth; her school; her education after the bee; her married name, if any; and anything about her adult life. The 1974 wire copy, a local report and a single retrospective are the whole of the record collected here.

Reading a fifty-year-old bee

The archive for a champion of this vintage consists almost entirely of newspaper pages scanned decades later. Wire services moved a few hundred words on the night; a local paper ran a proud account; and that was the extent of it. Names are occasionally misspelled in the process — the Tuscaloosa News headline of 1974 rendered her home town as Gordon rather than Gordo — which is a useful reminder about the reliability of even contemporaneous sources.

What survives is nonetheless specific: a date, a word, an age, a grade, a runner-up, a broadcaster. For a child who won a national competition half a century ago, that is a more precise record than most people leave behind, and it is the entire basis of this page.
