The night of the Octochamps

The final ran 20 rounds across three days, and the eight spellers still standing had beaten 557 competitors aged between seven and fifteen. Round after round, the words the bee had prepared were spelled correctly, and none of the eight could be eliminated.

Scripps declared them joint champions. Each received 50,000 dollars and a Scripps Cup. The pronouncer, Jacques Bailly, called them "the most phenomenal assemblage of spellers in the history of this storied competition", and the Associated Press headline made the same point from the other side: the bee had been too easy for the octet of champions.

Scripps had shared the title before, but never like this. Ties had produced two champions in several earlier years; eight was a different category of result, and it came only after officials had worked through the words held in reserve for exactly this situation.

Erysipelas

Her winning word names a bacterial skin infection, from the Greek for red skin. Like most of the words in the 2019 endgame it is medical and Greek-derived, the territory where the bee's best spellers are strongest because the roots are systematic.

Howard, then fourteen, celebrated with a dance on stage, an image that ran widely in coverage of a finish that had otherwise become a clerical exercise in declaring winners. She was Alabama's second champion in the competition's history.

Alabama is not one of the bee's traditional powers. Its regional programme sends a speller to Washington each year like every other territory, and the state had produced one champion before Howard, which is why the result led the news in Huntsville rather than sitting in a list.

What the eight-way title meant

The Atlantic described the outcome as eight middle schoolers toppling the Scripps Spelling Bee, which is nearer the truth than the language of a tie. The competition had been beaten by the quality of its own finalists rather than won by one of them.

It is also the best available measure of how hard the preparation had become. Eight children, none older than fourteen, spelled everything put in front of them for 20 rounds. The bee's word list, assembled by professionals from an unabridged dictionary, was not equal to them.
