The entry

EdTech Magazine's finalist list of 11 August 2015 describes her project in four words: an automated diagnosis of Alzheimer's. It was one of two entries among the twenty aimed at the same disease. The other, from Krtin Nithiyanandam of the United Kingdom, took a molecular approach to diagnosis and treatment.

The two routes represent the genuine fork in Alzheimer's research. One attacks the biology: the proteins that misfold and aggregate in the brain, and the antibodies or small molecules that might reach them. The other attacks the reading: given a brain scan or a battery of cognitive tests, can a computer see the disease earlier and more consistently than a clinician can? Cheerla's project sits on the second road.

Why early detection is the hard part

Alzheimer's disease is typically diagnosed after symptoms are visible, by which time the underlying pathology has been accumulating for years. Almost every serious proposal for slowing the disease depends on identifying it earlier, which turns diagnosis itself into the bottleneck.

Automated image analysis is attractive here for the same reason it is attractive in radiology generally: a classifier does not tire, does not vary between Monday and Friday, and can be pointed at subtle, distributed patterns across a whole scan rather than at the single feature a human eye is trained to notice. Its weaknesses are equally standard. A system learns the population it is shown, and a model trained on one set of scanners, one age profile or one clinical population can fail quietly on another.

The 2015 cohort

Medical detection dominated the 2015 finalist list. Alongside Cheerla and Nithiyanandam were Tanay Tandon, with rapid, portable and automated blood morphology tests; Adriel Sumathipala, with rapid, portable and affordable early detection of cardiac disease; and Olivia Hallisey, with a method of using silk to store and transport Ebola antibodies.

The rest of the list ran to water and energy: Calvin Rieder of Canada extracting drinking water from air; Deepika Kurup on solar-powered silver water treatment; Lalita Prasida Sripada Srisai of India absorbing pollutants with corn cobs; Anela Arifi and Ilda Ismaili of Bosnia-Herzegovina converting chicken feathers into hydrogen storage material and biodiesel; Eliott Sarrey of France building a smartphone-controlled gardening robot.

How the fair worked

The Google Science Fair was an online contest open to teenagers anywhere with an internet connection, which is why the 2015 finalists came from at least ten countries. Projects were submitted over the web; the twenty selected finalists were flown to California and judged in person at Google's Mountain View headquarters on 21 September 2015.

The grand prize was a $50,000 scholarship together with other prizes. EdTech Magazine's article records the selection rather than the outcome, and does not state where individual finalists placed on the day of judging.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: Cheerla was named a global finalist at the 2015 Google Science Fair; her project was an automated system for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease; the twenty finalists were selected from thousands of entries and judged at Mountain View on 21 September 2015; the grand prize that year was a $50,000 scholarship.

Not documented, in the source used here: her age, her school, her home state, the data or technique behind the system, its measured accuracy, whether she placed in the final judging, and anything she has done since 2015. The finalist listing is short by design; where this page has nothing, it says so rather than filling the gap.

Questions people ask about Anika Cheerla

What was Anika Cheerla's project?

An automated diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, which made her one of twenty global finalists at the 2015 Google Science Fair.

Did she win the fair?

The source used here names her as a global finalist, not as the grand prize winner. The grand prize was a $50,000 scholarship.

How old is Anika Cheerla?

No source consulted gives her age or birth year. The competition was open to teenagers.

Was anyone else working on Alzheimer's that year?

Yes. Krtin Nithiyanandam of the United Kingdom was a finalist with a molecular approach to diagnosing and treating the same disease.

Why does early diagnosis matter?

Alzheimer's pathology builds for years before symptoms appear, so almost every proposal for slowing the disease depends on identifying it earlier than a symptom-based diagnosis allows.

Where is Anika Cheerla now?

No source consulted for this page records anything about her after 2015.

Is Anika Cheerla on Wikipedia?

No Wikipedia article was found for her.
