🇨🇭 Amélie Kägi

She won the European title by topping every boulder — then took the world title six weeks later

Gold, under-17 women's boulder, World Climbing Youth Championship, Arco, Italy, July 2026 • European youth champion, Sukoró, Hungary, June 2026, with a 99.7-point sweep

Competition bouldering is scored on four problems, with points for reaching a zone hold and more for topping, minus a deduction for every extra attempt. Topping all four is uncommon in a final; topping all four cleanly enough to score 99.7 out of 100 is close to the ceiling. Amélie Kägi of Switzerland did it at the European Youth Championship in Sukoró, Hungary, in June 2026, and six weeks later won the under-17 women's boulder title at the World Climbing Youth Championship in Arco, Italy.

The scoring system is designed so that a perfect final is almost impossible. Twenty-five points are available per problem; flash them all — top each on the first attempt — and you have 100. Every additional attempt costs a fraction, so a score of 99.7 means four tops with a single extra attempt across the whole final. In a discipline whose entire purpose is to defeat the strongest climber present, that result says the routesetting did not hold her anywhere.

Boulder problems at this level are not tests of strength alone. Each is a puzzle with a hidden solution: the movement that works may be a heel hook, a dynamic jump, a compression squeeze between two sloping holds, and the athlete has a few minutes to find it and execute it. Attempts are limited by the clock, so a wrong first read costs points that cannot be recovered. The skill is therefore half physical and half diagnostic, and it is diagnosed under a stopwatch in front of a crowd.

Switzerland is a serious climbing nation but not a dominant one in youth competition, where the medal table is usually written by Japan, South Korea, China and, in Europe, by the larger federations. Kägi is from Wintersingen, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, and her results were reported by the Swiss Alpine Club, the national federation, and by regional Swiss and German-language outlets that covered both the European and the world title.

Sequencing the two wins matters. A continental title in June and a world title in July, in the same category and the same discipline, removes most of the arguments that a single result is noise: different routesetters, different walls, a stronger field at the world event including the Japanese and Korean teams that do not appear at a European championship, and the same athlete on top of both.

Her age has been reported inconsistently — some Swiss coverage of the European final described her as 14, later reporting from Arco as 15 — which most plausibly reflects a birthday falling between the two competitions. This profile does not choose one number and present it as certain: she competed in the under-17 category, and the published record supports 14 or 15 depending on the date.

What follows from a result like this is usually a move toward the senior circuit, where the same four-problem format is used and the fields are populated by the athletes who won these titles two or three years earlier. Nothing about that transition is guaranteed, and this profile does not predict it — the verified fact is that at 14 or 15 she was the best boulderer of her age in Europe and then in the world, six weeks apart.

A 99.7 out of 100 in a boulder final means four problems topped with a single extra attempt in the entire round — the routesetters, whose job is to stop the field, did not stop her once. She then took that form to a world championship where the Japanese, Korean and Chinese teams she had not faced in Europe were present, and won again. Two titles, two continents, six weeks, at 14 or 15.
