The surprise
ITV's official Britain's Got Talent site ran a teaser on 21 April 2024 headlined on a talented ten-year-old getting a surprise from his idols. The research record behind this page identifies those idols as Diversity, the dance crew that won the show in 2009 and whose members have judged and performed on it since, and describes the moment as an invitation Braine had dreamed of.
That identification comes from the research record rather than from the teaser's own headline, and the series results table on Wikipedia carries no mention of Diversity at all. Both facts are set down here rather than merged, because the difference between what a broadcaster published and what a research note asserts is exactly the distinction this page exists to keep.
The 2024 semi-final
Britain's Got Talent series 17 ran in the spring of 2024, hosted by Ant and Dec, with Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli judging. Braine appeared in the first semi-final and finished sixth on 5.4 per cent of the public vote, which eliminated him.
The series was won by Sydnie Christmas, a 28-year-old singer from Meopham in Kent, described in the results table as the first solo female winner of the show who was not a dog act. Braine did not reach that final; the semi-final is where his run in the competition ended.
Street dance at ten
Street dance rewards precision at speed, and the discipline has an unusually young competitive culture: crews train children from primary-school age and the form's best-known British ambassadors, Diversity among them, came up through exactly that route. A ten-year-old soloist on a national stage is unusual but not unprecedented.
What Braine's routines consisted of is not described in either source used for this page. The ITV item is a short teaser and the results table is a table. Neither carries a description of the choreography, the music or his training.
Why the semi-final is the real cut
Britain's Got Talent auditions thousands of acts and puts a few dozen into a week of live semi-finals. In each of those, the public vote decides the leading act and the judges usually choose between second and third. Sixth place with 5.4 per cent means finishing outside that range on a night when the whole country was voting.
The number is worth stating plainly rather than dressing up. He was one of the acts that did not go through. He was also ten years old, competing live on national television against adults, having cleared a panel audition to get there.
Venti domande, otto minuti di orologio e un percentile misurato su tutti quelli che l’hanno fatto. Senza registrazione.
Fai il test del QI →What is documented and what is not
Documented: ITV's teaser of 21 April 2024 about a talented ten-year-old surprised by his idols, and the series results table entry giving his age as 10, his act as dancer, his home as Manchester, his appearance in semi-final one and his elimination in sixth place on 5.4 per cent.
Not documented in these sources: his date of birth, his school, his dance crew or training, the routines he performed, and anything about him since the 2024 series. The identity of the idols who surprised him comes from the research record, which also flags his coverage as thin. That flag is accurate and is repeated here.
