🇸🇿 Sakhiwe Shongwe

The project

The Google Science Fair's own announcement describes the entry in a single line: it explores an affordable way to provide hydroponics to poor subsistence farmers. Hydroponics grows plants without soil, and the cost of the equipment is what usually keeps it out of reach of smallholders.

That framing is what separates the project from most science-fair engineering. The technical question was not whether soil-free growing works, which is long established, but whether it can be built cheaply enough for a farmer with almost no capital. The sources do not describe the design the pair proposed, so this page does not describe it either.

The Science in Action award

Scientific American's Science in Action prize was created for projects that address a practical problem rather than an abstract one. Shongwe and Mahlalela won it in 2012, and the award came with $50,000 in prize funds and a year's mentorship to explore how their project could help the lives of subsistence farmers in Swaziland and around the world.

Winning it did not remove them from the rest of the competition. The announcement states that the Science in Action winners remained eligible for the category and grand prizes, and the pair travelled to the final in Mountain View as finalists in the 13 to 14 age group.

The final in Mountain View

The 2012 Google Science Fair narrowed a global online entry to fifteen finalists across three age groups, who were invited to Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, in July to present their projects to an international panel of judges. The final was held on 23 July 2012.

Their age group contained Sumit Singh of India, Alexy Klozkov and Milena Klimenko of Ukraine, Martin Schneider and Joshua Li of the United States, and Jonah Kohn of the United States, who won the category. The grand prize went to Brittany Wenger for a neural network service supporting breast cancer diagnosis.

Why an agricultural entry was unusual

Science fairs at this level are dominated by computing, medicine and materials. An entry aimed at subsistence farming answers to a different test, because its value depends on whether a farmer could afford and build it, not on whether the science is novel.

The prize structure recognised that. A year of mentorship attached to the money suggests the award was meant to move a prototype towards use rather than reward a completed result, which is a rare shape for a school-age prize.

What is documented - and what is not

Two posts on the Google Science Fair's blog are the whole evidential basis of this page. They record the award, the prize, the one-line project description, the age category, the venue and the date.

They do not give a birth year, a school, a home town, a photograph or a quotation. Nothing in the sources used here records what happened to the hydroponics project afterwards, or what Shongwe did next. The 2012 sources refer to the country as Swaziland; it is listed here under the name it uses now, Eswatini.
