Il 27 marzo 2017, la libanese Rime Tarchihi ha prodotto 10.000 cifre, piazzandosi al 34° posto. L'inserimento è datato e preciso. Attorno ad esso, il record pubblicato è quasi vuoto.

The entry on the list

Rime Tarchihi appears on the Pi World Ranking List at rank 34, tied on total with other entrants, having recited 10,000 digits of pi on 27 March 2017. Four values — name, country, figure, date — make up the whole of her published record in the discipline.

That is characteristic of the sport. The list is a results table, not a biographical register, and it gives the same four fields to every name it carries, from the record holder downwards. What distinguishes Tarchihi's line is the country beside it: Lebanon is a rare entry in a table whose upper reaches are dominated by India and China.

Where 10,000 digits sits

The top of the list is held by Suresh Kumar Sharma of India with 70,030 digits, set on 21 October 2015, ahead of Rajveer Meena with 70,000 and Chao Lu of China with 67,890, recited in 2005. Fourth and fifth places, 45,000 and 43,000 digits, are also Indian.

Ten thousand digits is therefore a long way below the summit of the table and an enormous distance above everyday memory. Recited at a steady pace, a five-figure sequence takes hours to deliver without a single error, and the preparation behind it is measured in months. The gap between rank 34 and rank one is a difference of degree within a group of people who have all done something most never attempt.

The Arab world on the list

The research behind this page describes Tarchihi as the only Arab entrant in the upper part of the ranking list. The table as read here confirms her rank, her total and her date, and shows that the leading positions belong to Indian and Chinese entrants, but it does not itself carry a statement about the composition of the top 40, and that comparison is left unverified.

What can be stated is narrower and still notable: Lebanon is represented on the standing list of pi recitation, by a dated entry of five figures, at a rank most entrants never reach.

What the list does not record

The Pi World Ranking List publishes no ages, no home towns, no schools, no photographs and no interviews. For Tarchihi, as for most names on it, the table line is the entire published trail. No source in this record describes how she prepared, where the recitation took place, who witnessed it or how long it took.

The page as read for this article also does not set out its own verification requirements, so the procedure standing behind the figure of 10,000 is not documented here. That is a limitation of the source, not a doubt about the entry, and it is recorded rather than filled in.

Why pi makes a fair contest

Pi is infinite and non-repeating, which removes every shortcut. There is no pattern to exploit, no compression to be found, and no argument about whether a recited digit is correct, because the sequence is fixed and public. A contest built on it needs no equipment, no venue and no governing body beyond a table that everyone agrees to consult.

That is why the discipline reaches countries with no memory-sport infrastructure at all, and why a single ranked list can function as its global record. Tarchihi's 10,000 digits of March 2017 is one dated line in that record, verifiable in the only way the sport allows: against the digits themselves.
