🇺🇸 Milo Golding

He asked his father how he kept going. The answer became a Google doodle four years later.

Doodle for Google 2021: a Kentucky eleventh-grader, a $30,000 scholarship, and a charity for bereaved children.

In June 2021 an eleventh-grader from Kentucky won the national Doodle for Google contest with an entry about hope, made after the death of his father. Milo Golding's doodle ran on Google's homepage for twenty-four hours on 15 June 2021 and carried a $30,000 college scholarship. He also founded Sanguine Path, a charity for children who have lost someone close to them.

The sentence behind the drawing

The 2021 contest asked entrants what made them strong, and Google published Golding's answer alongside the doodle. “I am strong because I have hope,” he wrote. “I once asked my father how he overcame obstacles and became who he wanted to be. He replied, ‘Hope, hope keeps me strong.’”

Google's account records that his father died when he was thirteen. Two years after that, the exchange he remembered became a national contest entry. What the doodle depicts is not described on the page used for this record, and this page does not guess at it.

Twenty-four hours on the homepage

The winning doodle ran on Google's homepage on 15 June 2021 and stayed there for a day. The win was announced on NBC's TODAY, which is where most of the country first heard the artist's name.

The prize followed the contest's standard division. Golding received a $30,000 college scholarship. His school received a $50,000 technology package. Google's page does not name the school, and no other source here supplies it.

Sanguine Path

The part of the record that outlasts the doodle is the charity. Golding founded Sanguine Path, which serves children aged eighteen and under who have experienced the loss of a loved one. According to Google, it provides holiday gifts, care packages and back-to-school kits to grieving children.

The three items are worth reading slowly, because between them they cover the calendar points at which a bereaved child is most exposed: a holiday, a difficult week, the first day of a school year. An eleventh-grader had worked out that grief is not continuous but seasonal, and had organised around the seasons.

What is documented — and what is not

Google's own page is firm on the year, the grade, the state, the launch date, the twenty-four-hour run, both prize figures, the artist statement, the age at which his father died, the announcement on TODAY, and the existence and purpose of Sanguine Path.

It gives no age, no year of birth, no school name, no town and no description of the artwork itself. It names no member of his family. No source used here reports the size of the 2021 field, and nothing in this record describes what Golding or Sanguine Path has done since 2021. Those absences are stated rather than filled in.

A prize that is also a platform

Doodle for Google is an art contest with an unusual afterlife. For one day the winner's work sits at the top of a page used by a large share of the country, which is a quantity of attention no school art show can approach. Most winners use it and then return to school.

Golding's case is the other kind. The drawing was about a private loss, the statement attached to it quoted his father directly, and the organisation he founded addressed the same subject for other children. The doodle lasted twenty-four hours. The reason for it, as the record has it, was already several years old.
