GIOVANE SCIENZIATO

🇺🇸 Marina Dimitrov

The prize, October 2009

Tech & Learning reported the result on 6 October 2009. Dimitrov, of Sacajawea Middle School in Bozeman, was named America's Top Young Scientist, winner of that year's Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. The award was $50,000 in United States savings bonds, a face value carrying a cash value of $25,000.

She also received 3M's Innovation Prize: a trip to the company's global headquarters in St Paul, Minnesota, to meet its scientists and be walked through technologies the firm builds on, among them microreplication, nanotechnology, advanced materials and processing. For a middle-school student the second prize is arguably the larger one. Savings bonds mature. A day inside an industrial research laboratory is the part that tends to redirect a career.

What the finalists actually had to do

The ten finalists were not asked to defend a poster. They competed in live science challenges built around a theme the organisers called The Science of Everyday Life, and the tasks were practical: invent a solution using household items, remove impurities from water, restore a historic icon, and build a tower able to withstand an earthquake.

That format is unusual among American youth science prizes, most of which reward a research paper prepared over months. Here the judging rewarded improvisation under time pressure in front of an audience, which is closer to how engineering problems arrive than a polished submission is. Two finalists tied as first runners-up: Nico Seamons of Socorro, New Mexico, and Nikita Gaurav of Beaverton, Oregon.

Bozeman, and how she got there

The finalists were selected, Tech & Learning wrote, from hundreds of students across the country. Dimitrov's school, Sacajawea Middle School, sits in Bozeman, a university town in south-west Montana of the sort that rarely supplies national science champions; the competition's centre of gravity has generally been the large suburban districts of the coasts and the Midwest.

What the report does not contain is the thing readers most want: her project. The article names the winner, the school, the prize and the format, and never describes the invention or idea that carried her through. Nor does it give her age or grade, quote her, or quote a judge.

What the challenge became

The competition Dimitrov won has since grown into one of the most visible middle-school science prizes in the United States, and its shape has changed. By 2022 Discovery Education was describing the fifteenth annual challenge; by 2024, the seventeenth. The finals moved to 3M's global headquarters in St Paul, and the top prize settled at $25,000 in cash plus the title.

The most important change is the summer that now precedes the final. Each finalist is paired one-to-one with a 3M scientist as a mentor and spends months turning an idea into a working prototype before competing. Recent winners show what that produces: a machine-learning headphone treating ear infections with blue light in 2022, a skin-cancer-treating soap in 2023, a handheld spectrophotometric pesticide detector in 2024. Dimitrov won under the older, faster format.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: Dimitrov attended Sacajawea Middle School in Bozeman, Montana; she won the 2009 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and the title America's Top Young Scientist; the prize was $50,000 in savings bonds with a $25,000 cash value plus 3M's Innovation Prize; the final was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City with ten finalists.

Not documented: her age or grade at the time, the project or invention that won, any quotation from her, and anything at all about what she has done since October 2009. Seventeen years on, the single contemporaneous trade-press report remains the whole of the public record found for this page. That silence is itself worth noting, because the careers of later winners have been followed closely by the press.
