🇺🇸 Le'Ezra Brown

Equalled the world under-20 110m hurdles record — and broke two other records getting there

2026 World Athletics U20 110m hurdles champion • 12.72, equalling Sasha Zhoya's world U20 record • North American U20 record of 12.89 in the heats

World under-20 records in the sprint hurdles are unusually durable, because the event punishes anything less than a perfect rhythm over ten barriers and the athletes who run it fastest are usually already senior professionals. Sasha Zhoya's mark of 12.72, set when the French athlete won the 2021 world U20 title in Nairobi, had stood for five years. On 8 August 2026, in the final of the World Athletics U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, the American Le'Ezra Brown equalled it exactly. He had run a North American U20 record of 12.89 in the heats two days earlier and a wind-aided 12.82 in the semifinals. The final was the third time in three rounds that he improved.

The 110 metres hurdles is the most technically unforgiving event on the track. The barriers are 1.067 metres high at U20 level over the 39-inch specification, the spacing is fixed, and an athlete who is even fractionally out of position at the first hurdle spends the rest of the race recovering. Brown's 12.72 was built on the start: he was clear of the field within three barriers and did not surrender the lead. Japan's Jeremy Koga took silver in 12.97 and Brown's compatriot Zacchaeus Brocks equalled his personal best of 12.98 for bronze.

The depth behind him is what makes the winning time legible. Four athletes in the final set national U20 records chasing him: Norway's Anthony Johnsen (13.00), the Bahamas' Jahcario Wilson (13.08), Brazil's Odair Goncalves with an area record of 13.15, and Türkiye's Koray Uygun with a national U20 record of 13.20. A world U20 record run into a weak field is a curiosity; one that drags four national records out of the athletes behind it is a race.

Brown's progression through the championships was linear and public. The North American U20 record of 12.89 came first, in the morning heats on day three. The semifinal produced 12.82 with an illegal tailwind — fast, but unratifiable. The final delivered 12.72 with legal conditions, subject to the usual ratification procedure. Running three rounds inside four days and getting quicker in each is a physiological result as much as a technical one; sprint hurdlers commonly lose two or three hundredths per round through accumulated fatigue.

His own account of the day was that he knew before he raced. Speaking immediately after the final, he described feeling it in the warm-up — one acceleration was enough for his coach to tell him he was ready. He then named the target directly: a national senior title, and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. That is an unusually specific ambition to state at a junior championship, and it places the record in the context he intends for it.

Equalling a record is not the same as breaking one, and the distinction matters here. Zhoya's 12.72 remains co-held, and Zhoya himself went on to a senior career at the highest level, which is the most useful comparison available: the previous holder of this mark is the evidence that the mark predicts something. Brown's ratified time also sits within a few hundredths of the senior world-class threshold, which is where the ordinary rules of junior athletics stop applying. What is not yet known is how he handles a full senior season, with rounds against adults, on a schedule that runs from February to September.

“It is crazy. I felt it in my warmup. I did one acceleration and my coach told me I was ready.”

“I was running good and I just knew it was going to happen. It is big, we have been talking about this for some time. I want to be a national champion and be running at LA 28.”

A world under-20 record that has stood for five years, in the most technical event on the track, equalled by an athlete who improved in all three rounds of the same championship. The supporting detail is the field: four national U20 records were set behind him in the same eight-man final, which rules out the usual explanation that a fast junior time reflects a soft race.

The caveat is the wind and the ratification. The 12.82 in the semifinal does not count because it was wind-aided, and the 12.72 was reported subject to the usual ratification procedure. It is also an equalled record rather than a broken one — the mark is now shared, not owned.
