The distinction is precise and worth keeping precise. Fuller qualified at five and competed at six, having had a birthday between the regional contest and the national bee. Reuters framed her, in its report of 31 May 2017, as the youngest competitor the event had seen.

Qualification is the harder half of that sentence. A speller reaches the national bee by winning a regional competition, usually against children of middle-school age. The national field is the set of people who have already won somewhere, which is what makes the age gap in 2017 so large. Nobody is seeded into the bee, and nobody is admitted for being interesting; the only way in is to beat a room.

The bee she walked into

The 2017 competition was also notable for a change of rules. Reuters' report, headlined on the youngest competitor and a new tie breaker, records that the bee had introduced a fresh procedure for separating spellers who could not be separated on stage.

It was not needed. The Associated Press reported the following day that the title had gone outright to Ananya Vinay, a twelve-year-old from Fresno, who spelled marocain after the runner-up missed marram. Fuller's bee, in other words, ended with a clean single champion and a six-year-old in the record books for a different reason. Two of that week's three durable facts about the 2017 competition concern her: the youngest entrant it had ever had, and the rule it did not have to use.

Why the age record is unlikely to fall often

Age records in spelling are not set by talent alone; they are set by talent meeting an open entry system. Scripps qualification runs through regional bees rather than through school years, which is what allows a five-year-old to enter a field of thirteen-year-olds in the first place.

Even so, the arithmetic is unforgiving. A child of five must out-spell an entire region, and the words at that level are already drawn from outside ordinary reading. Fuller did it once, in the winter and spring of 2017, and the record stood as the outlier of that year's competition.
