🇺🇸 Allison Jia

Ha costruito un modello in miniatura di un circuito cerebrale morente vincendo 50.000 dollari a 17 anni.

Premio Intel Foundation Young Scientist all'International Science and Engineering Fair del 2019.

The award and the project title

Two Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards of $50,000 each were given at ISEF 2019. Jia took one of them; Rachel Seevers of Lexington, Kentucky took the other. Above them both sat the $75,000 Gordon E. Moore Award, won by Krithik Ramesh of Colorado.

Jia's entry was registered as "Modeling Neurodegeneration in vitro: A Dynamic Study of Tau in a Microfluidic Chamber System via Quantum Dot Labeling." Every element of that title is a method: the system is in vitro rather than in an animal, the geometry is a microfluidic chamber, the tracking is done with quantum dots, and the subject is tau.

Why tau is the protein to watch

Tau is one of the two proteins that define the pathology of Alzheimer's disease, and the way it spreads between neurons is among the central questions in the field. A laboratory that can watch tau move through a controlled circuit of cells, rather than inferring its path from dead tissue, is watching the mechanism rather than the aftermath.

That is what a microfluidic chamber offers: narrow channels that let researchers grow neurons in defined compartments and see what passes between them. Quantum-dot labelling adds the second half of the method, tagging the protein with a marker bright enough and stable enough to follow over time. The award listing names the approach but does not publish the results, the sample sizes or any subsequent paper.

The competition around her

Intel ISEF 2019 drew more than 1,800 finalists, selected from 423 affiliated fairs in more than 80 countries, regions and territories. Roughly 600 of them won an award of some kind, and 22 Best of Category winners each took $5,000 plus a $3,000 first-place prize, with $1,000 grants for their schools and their affiliated fairs.

Only three awards in the whole fair were larger than the one Jia won, and two of them were the same award given to someone else. That is the practical meaning of a Young Scientist Award: joint second in a field of nearly two thousand.

What is known since

Nothing in the sources gathered for this page describes Jia's work after May 2019 — no university, no laboratory, no published paper, no interview. The absence is worth stating plainly, because a reader arriving from a search engine is usually looking for exactly that.

What can be said is that the 2019 result stands on the organiser's own record. When the body that ran the competition publishes the winner, the amount and the project title, that is documentation rather than reputation.

How rare this kind of result is

High-school neuroscience of this type depends on access: microfluidic devices, quantum-dot reagents and imaging time are not standard school equipment. Projects that reach the ISEF podium in cellular neuroscience almost always involve a laboratory that opened its doors to a teenager, and the fair's rules require that the student's own contribution be documented and defended before judges.

That interview is the part outsiders underestimate. Finalists face repeated questioning on method and interpretation across the judging day, which is why the fair's top awards tend to go to students who can explain a technique as fluently as they can run it.
