What happened

The Emirates News Agency announced the result under a plain headline: Afaf Sherif from Palestine crowned winner of the Arab Reading Challenge. Gulf News recorded the detail around it: she was 17, the field consisted of 7.4 million students from 41,000 schools in 25 Arab countries, and the prize was Dh550,000, roughly $150,000. The ceremony took place at Dubai Opera and the award was presented by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.

Second place went to Sherif Sayed Mustafa of Egypt and third to Hafsa Al Danhani of the United Arab Emirates. The official Arab Reading Challenge site carries the announcement dated 23 October 2017, the closing event of the second edition.

What the competition demands

The challenge is not a reading list. Pupils read across the school year and record what they have read in summaries, then move through school, district and national rounds in which they are questioned about the content, the argument and the language of the books. The final is an oral examination in front of judges and an audience.

That structure is the reason the numbers are so large and the winner so singular. Millions enter because entry is a classroom activity; one person wins because the last round tests comprehension and articulacy rather than volume.

Scale, and what it has become

The competition grew quickly after the edition Afaf won. By the eighth edition in 2024, Khaleej Times reported 28.2 million participants from 229,620 schools in 50 countries, supervised by 154,643 teachers, with three co-champions each receiving Dh500,000 and a winning school taking Dh1 million.

Set against that trajectory, a 2017 victory over 7.4 million entrants sits at an early point in the challenge's growth, when the field was already vast and the prize already among the largest offered to a school pupil anywhere in the world.

What is documented, and what is not

Firmly established: the title, her nationality, her age of 17, the size of the field, the prize, the venue and the two runners-up. The research record notes a complication in the dating: the Gulf News page carries a 2018 timestamp, most likely from a later update, while the official announcement is dated October 2017.

Not established here: how many books she read, her school and city, her family, and anything she said on the night. No source read for this page carries a quotation from her, and none reports what she has done since 2017. Her date of birth is not stated anywhere in this record; the birth year of 2000 is derived from her age.

Why a reading prize on this scale exists

The Arab Reading Challenge was created by the Dubai government as a public campaign, which is why its prizes are on a scale usually reserved for sport and why the final is held in an opera house with a head of government presenting the award. The message is deliberate: reading in Arabic, at length, treated as a national contest.

For a Palestinian teenager, winning it in Dubai in front of that audience carried an additional weight that the wire copy recorded without comment. The record of the evening is short, formal and verifiable, and that is exactly what this page reports.
