Identical scores, different years
In 2024, at the olympiad in Bath, his scoresheet read 7, 7, 4, 7, 7, 3: a total of 35 and joint fifth place among 609 contestants. In 2025, on Australia's Sunshine Coast, it read 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 0: the same total of 35, and joint twenty-seventh among 630.
Nothing about the contestant explains the gap. The 2024 paper was the hardest in this record, with only one perfect score in the world; the 2025 paper produced five. When the field scores higher, the same total slides down the table, and 35 fell from the top five to the edge of the gold medal band.
Two routes to the same number
The internal shape of the two scoresheets is also different, and more revealing than the totals. In 2024 he took partial credit on two problems, four points on the third and three on the sixth: real progress on both, complete proofs on neither.
In 2025 he solved five problems outright and scored nothing at all on the sixth. That is the classic profile of a strong olympiad paper: everything accessible closed cleanly, and the hardest problem of the competition left standing. The same 35 came from near-misses in one year and from a clean five out of six in the next.
What gold means here
Olympiad medals are set by proportion. No more than half the contestants receive one, and gold, silver and bronze are handed out in roughly a one to two to three ratio, so gold falls to about one contestant in twelve. In 2025, 35 points was enough for it, with several contestants sharing twenty-seventh place on that mark.
