The title and the ladder to it

The National Youth Poet Laureate programme is built as a hierarchy: city laureates are chosen first, then regional ambassadors, then one national laureate. Agbaroji climbed all three rungs in about eighteen months — Los Angeles in 2022, Western Regional Ambassador in 2023, and the national title in the same year.

The role is not honorific in the way a prize is. Laureates are expected to perform, to represent the programme publicly and to pursue a stated civic project, which is why the selection weighs a candidate's platform alongside the poems.

She has also performed at events for the Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti, for the Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors and for Tina Lawson. Her work has been published or broadcast by NPR's KCRW, Noema Magazine and the Harvard Technology Review, and she is a YoungArts winner in spoken word and a Scholastic Art and Writing honoree.

The range is the point. A poet who can hold a football stadium at half-time and a literary tour audience on the same résumé is being asked to do two different jobs, and the laureate programme selects for exactly that ability to carry a poem into rooms that did not come for poetry.
