SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Joel Montgomery

A Denver seventh-grader won the national bee at 12, then turned up on Ed Sullivan

National Spelling Bee champion, June 1959, on the word catamaran

In June 1959 a 12-year-old seventh-grader from Denver out-spelled the rest of the country. Joel Montgomery took the National Spelling Bee on catamaran, and in the days that followed appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Sunday night variety programme that was then the largest stage in American television.

The 1959 final

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported the result plainly: a Denver seventh-grader had out-spelled all comers to win the first prize. Montgomery was 12 and a pupil at Byers Junior High School in Denver, which made him young for a competition dominated by eighth-graders in their final year of eligibility.

His winning word was catamaran, a twin-hulled boat, borrowed into English from Tamil. The runner-up, Robert Crossley, went out on fanfaronade - a word for bluster or bragging, from the French. Montgomery was the first boy to take the title since 1954.

Ed Sullivan

The bee's champions of the 1950s were handed straight to television. An appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show put a 12-year-old in front of an audience measured in tens of millions, on the programme that also introduced much of America to Elvis Presley and, later, the Beatles.

It is a piece of the era that no longer has an equivalent. A modern champion trends online for a day; a 1959 champion sat on a national stage on a Sunday evening in front of most of the households that owned a set.

Twelve years old

Age matters in a bee more than spectators assume. The rules cap eligibility rather than setting a floor, so the field skews towards the oldest permitted competitors, who have had the most years to prepare and the most rounds of regional experience.

A 12-year-old winner has beaten a field with an average of one or two more years of study than his own. The Times Daily's coverage that week ran under a headline about the man who produces champion spellers, a reminder that the bee's coaching culture was already established by the end of the 1950s.

The words themselves

Catamaran and fanfaronade are a fair sample of what the bee draws on. One is a loanword from a South Indian language, absorbed through maritime trade; the other is a French borrowing from Spanish, carrying a sense of empty boasting. Neither is reconstructible from English patterns alone.

This is why serious spellers study languages of origin rather than word lists. A champion can be handed a word never seen before and still spell it, because the origin narrows the possibilities to a handful and the ear decides between them.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the 1959 championship, the winning word catamaran, his age of 12, Byers Junior High in Denver, the runner-up Robert Crossley and his miss on fanfaronade, the Ed Sullivan appearance and the note that he was the first boy to win since 1954.

Not documented in the sources used here: the prize money, the number of rounds, his family, his later schooling and anything about his life after 1959. Newspaper coverage of the bee in that period lasted a single news cycle and did not return to its champions.
