SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Amanda Goad

She won the national bee at thirteen, then took the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament four years later

A Richmond competitor who beat two very different American proving grounds.

Winning the National Spelling Bee is rare enough. Winning it and then taking the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament is a double almost nobody manages. Amanda Goad of Richmond, Virginia, spelled lyceum to win the 1992 bee at thirteen, collected $31,200 on Jeopardy! in 1996, and went on to Harvard Law School and a career in environmental law.

Lyceum

The Oklahoman's headline on 29 May 1992 played the obvious card: "This Winner Is Spelled 'G-O-A-D'". The Washington Post had previewed the season the day before, in a piece on the bee's month of regional competitions.

The winning word was lyceum — from the Athenian grove where Aristotle taught, by way of Latin, and a trap for anyone who reaches for an i. She was thirteen, from Richmond, Virginia, and it was not her first national final: the record here places her in a tie for fourth in 1991. One year from fourth to first is the classic champion's progression.

The Jeopardy! double

In 1996 she won the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament and $31,200. The two competitions test different machinery. The bee rewards a deep, narrow system — root languages, letter patterns, methodical construction under a clock. Jeopardy! rewards breadth, recall speed and nerve on a buzzer.

Very few people are built for both. TIME's profile of her in its 2007 series on past champions adds a third data point: a perfect score on the SAT. The pattern across all three is not a trick of memory but a tolerance for being tested, and a habit of preparing for it properly.

Harvard, and the law

She graduated from Harvard Law School in 2005 and, as of TIME's 2007 profile, was working in environmental law in New York City. It is the least theatrical of the destinations in this collection and one of the most demanding: environmental practice is an argument about technical evidence conducted in front of people who are not scientists.

The through-line from a spelling final is more direct than it looks. Both jobs involve taking an unfamiliar body of specialist vocabulary, working out what its parts mean, and presenting a conclusion out loud while being judged on precision.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1992 National Spelling Bee on lyceum, aged thirteen; a tie for fourth at the 1991 bee; a home in Richmond, Virginia; victory in the 1996 Jeopardy! Teen Tournament with $31,200; a perfect SAT score as reported by TIME; a Harvard Law School degree in 2005; and environmental law practice in New York City as of 2007.

Not documented in the sources used here: her date of birth; her school in Richmond; her undergraduate institution; her employer; and anything about her work after 2007.

Why the double is so rare

The spelling bee and the quiz format select for nearly opposite temperaments. A speller wins by refusing to answer until the analysis is complete — asking for the language of origin, the part of speech, the alternate pronunciations — and by tolerating thirty seconds of silence while the audience waits. A quiz contestant wins by committing to an answer before anyone else does.

Doing both means having the analytical method and being willing to abandon it on a buzzer. That is the reason champions of one so rarely surface in the other, and the reason Amanda Goad's four-year run from a Washington stage to a television studio is worth more attention than either title on its own.
