Zheng Jie

Chinese female tennis player

A world number 15 ranking in May 2009 marked the career-high singles position for Zheng Jie, a Chinese tennis player from Chengdu. Rising from a childhood where her short stature led parents to doubt her professional prospects, she emerged to become the first player from her nation to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal.

Early Development and Breakthroughs

Zheng began playing tennis at age ten, influenced by her older sister, eventually graduating from the Sichuan Sports Academy in June 2000. Her professional trajectory gained momentum in 2002 with two $25k title wins. By 2004, she established herself on the international stage by reaching the fourth round of the French Open, becoming the first Chinese woman to advance that far at a major event.

Major Tournament Success

The 2008 Wimbledon Championships served as a career milestone when Zheng defeated then-world number one Ana Ivanovic. This performance made her the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal. She repeated this success at the 2010 Australian Open. Her doubles career proved equally prolific, yielding 15 titles, including wins at Wimbledon and the Australian Open in 2006 alongside partner Yan Zi. Additionally, she secured a bronze medal in doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Professional Autonomy and Challenges

A severe ankle injury in 2007 necessitated surgery, an ordeal she acknowledged by keeping fragments of her removed bone in a vial as a reminder of her recovery. In 2009, she departed from the Chinese Tennis Association to manage her own career. This transition altered her financial structure and support network, moving away from state-provided medical backing toward a self-managed professional path alongside her husband and coach, Zhang Yu.
