At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Yury Vlasov became the first individual to clean and jerk more than 200 kilograms, lifting 202.5 kilograms to secure gold. This victory cemented his status as the premier heavyweight lifter of his era, a period during which he set 34 world records and captured four world championship titles.
Military Education and Athletic Ascent
Born in 1935 in Makiivka to parents Pyotr and Maria, Vlasov attended the Saratov Suvorov military school before graduating from the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy in 1959. He joined the Armed Forces sports society in 1956, achieving the status of Master of Sport of the USSR by 1957. By 1959, he entered a dominant phase, winning every competition he entered until 1963.

Vlasov served as the Soviet Union flag bearer at both the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games. While he secured gold in 1960, his 1964 performance ended with a silver medal. He attributed this result to tactical maneuvers employed by Leonid Zhabotinsky during the final clean-and-jerk event. Following this disappointment, Vlasov briefly retired, though he returned to training in 1966 before officially concluding his competitive career in 1968.
Literary Pursuits and Political Service
Vlasov balanced his athletic career with professional writing, publishing short stories as early as 1959. After retiring from the Soviet Army as a captain, he authored over 15 novels, including the Flaming Cross trilogy. He later transitioned into national politics, serving in the Congress of People's Deputies and the 1st State Duma of the Russian Federation. He also participated in the 1996 Russian presidential election.
Later Years and Legacy
In his later life, Vlasov held administrative roles, including presidency of the Soviet Weightlifting Federation and the Soviet Bodybuilding Federation. Despite health complications and surgeries, he maintained his interest in strength sports, lifting 185 kilograms at a 2004 masters event in Moscow at age 69. He died in 2021 in Moscow and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
