Education and Early Development
After moving to New York in the mid-1980s, Kim resided in Staten Island. Her interest in performance began in middle school, eventually leading to her enrollment at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. She graduated from this institution in 1989. Kim began her career in the United States with minor appearances on MTV and various ABC dramas before moving to South Korea in 1996. Her return prompted roles in Splendid Holiday and the television drama Wedding Dress. The 1999 production Shiri provided her international recognition as it became the highest-grossing film in South Korean history at that time. Throughout the early 2000s, she appeared in projects such as The Legend of Gingko, Ardor, and Yesterday.
International Television and Recent Work
From 2004 to 2010, Kim starred as Sun-Hwa Kwon in the American television series Lost. This role cemented her presence in the US market. She later appeared in the ABC drama Mistresses in 2013. Returning to South Korean television, she headlined Ms. Ma, Nemesis in 2018 and appeared in Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area in 2022. Her recent credits include the 2023 Netflix series XO, Kitty and voice work for the 2025 animated film KPop Demon Hunters.
