Yukihiro Takahashi, born in 1952 at Ōokayama, became a fixture of the Japanese music scene through a career spanning drumming, songwriting, and fashion design. He achieved international recognition as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, where his precise percussion and vocal contributions influenced global electronic music trends throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
Early Career and Band Formations
Takahashi began playing drums in the fifth grade while attending Rikkyo Junior High School. By 1969, he joined the folk band Garo as a support player. In 1972, he withdrew from Musashino Art University to join the Sadistic Mika Band. He replaced Hiro Tsunoda, touring the United Kingdom as an opening act for Roxy Music. Following the group's dissolution, he became part of The Sadistics.

In 1978, he joined Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono to form the Yellow Magic Orchestra. While originally intended as an instrumental act, Takahashi transitioned into a lead vocalist. Throughout the 1980s, he pursued a prolific solo career while collaborating with artists such as Bill Nelson, Steve Jansen, and Keiichi Suzuki. He later performed in numerous projects including The Beatniks, Sketch Show, Metafive, and Human Audio Sponge.
Fashion and Creative Interests
Beyond music, Takahashi maintained an active career in fashion design. He operated brands including Bricks, Bricks-MONO, and the YUKIHIRO TAKAHASHI COLLECTION. He also produced runway music for Yohji Yamamoto. His other interests included radio broadcasting, acting in films such as The Discarnates and Norwegian Wood, and serving as president of the Tokyo Tsurukame Fishing Club.
Health and Final Years
In mid-2020, Takahashi began experiencing persistent headaches. An MRI revealed a brain tumor, which he underwent surgery to remove on August 13, 2020. Though he completed a course of treatment, his health complications continued. He died on January 11, 2023, in Karuizawa at age 70 from aspiration pneumonia.
