Born Ha Lingchun in Nanjing on 26 July 1957, the performer known professionally as Yuen Biao emerged from the rigorous training environment of the China Drama Academy. As a central figure in Hong Kong cinema, he built a multifaceted career spanning more than 130 film appearances, excelling as an actor, stunt coordinator, and expert in Chinese martial arts and acrobatics.
Training at the China Drama Academy
The fifth of eight children, Yuen moved to Hong Kong with his family at age five. By six, he was enrolled at the Peking Opera School, where he adopted the stage name Yuen Biao, meaning Little Tiger. Under the instruction of master Yu Jim-yuen, he developed early mastery of acrobatics alongside classmates Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan, forming part of the group known as the Seven Little Fortunes. He remained at the academy until age 16.

After leaving school, Yuen entered the film industry, initially finding work as a stuntman and extra in productions like Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon. His technical skills were highlighted in Game of Death in 1978, where he performed complex stunts required for the Bruce Lee body double. His trajectory accelerated in the late 1970s and 1980s with lead roles in Knockabout and The Prodigal Son, alongside frequent collaborations with his former schoolmates in films such as Project A and Dragons Forever.
Directing and International Reach
Yuen expanded his professional scope by establishing Yuen Biao Films Limited, which produced his directorial work A Kid from Tibet in 1991 and Kick Boxer in 1993. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he balanced film roles with television appearances, including parts in series like Righteous Guards and Real Kung Fu. His later work included international projects such as the 2000 film Shanghai Noon and recurring television roles that revisited his earlier character archetypes, such as Leung Jan in the Wing Chun series.
